Take a look at the Wiki page of the game. It says:
Wii Remotes randomly disconnect if "Enable Speaker Data" is on. Disable it to correct the problem.
So I suggest you disable Speaker Data and try again. You can find this option in the Wiimote settings, (first one) under Real Wiimote. After testing I found that it still does not work when you emulate a Wiimote, so you have to use two real Wiimotes for it to work.
Disabling Speaker Data and using two real Wiimotes got me into some Donkey Kong multiplayer (yes I tested it), so it will sure work for you too.
