Well , The the Gamecube emulator was able to play Wii games bc they were basicaly the same ,
It wont be able to upscale games like the Dolphin does but

Does this mean what I think it does? What are the odds that the Dolphin
be runing Wii U games without having to make a new emulator?

None whatsoever and even if it did it would run so slow in todays hardware that watching a slide-show would be more interesting.

This goes under the "I can't believe anyone is actually asking this" category. Tongue

I imagine the new system will also be more secure, not to mention lack of documentation. I'd also imagine the hardware isn't exactly all that similar like the GC/Wii are, not to mention this is a system that is on par with the graphics of the PS3 and possibly surpasses the PS3's graphics capabilities. Just like there is no PS3 emulator nor will there be any time soon for obvious reasons, there will be no emulator that will emulate the new Wii for a very long time to come.

If there is any chance of gathering enough documentation to code an emulator, after getting through the encryption and copyright protection mechanisms, it would have very low compatibility to start and would maybe run between 1 - 5 FPS at most on high end systems if you are lucky. Knowing Nintendo's history on wacky techniques such as framebuffer/efb/xfb, dsp, if they have anything new up their sleeves it would be even more of a development nightmare.

Newbies should also read this for an explanation why 3DS won't be able to run backups or launch homebrew let alone being emulated won't happen for at least the next decade or two:

Somehow I knew deep down someone would eventually make a thread like this.
"Normally if given a choice between doing something and nothing, I’d choose to do nothing. But I would do something if it helps someone else do nothing. I’d work all night if it meant nothing got done."

One positive point : it will prevent hacking (for a few time at least...) Wink

Part of the reason emulation of Nintendo systems has been relatively up-to-date in the past is the fact that Nintendo's hardware isn't exactly top-of-the-line. However, with the WiiU, I'd estimate at least a quad-core at 8ghz to 10ghz per core requirement for emulation. (Probably even higher for the PS3 (Slightly off-topic) since the ps3 is much more efficient in its hardware usage.)
