I can easily overclock my E8400 to a stable 3.6ghz with low temps. Temps are sitting at 37-38 with no load, and never go past 50 while running Dolphin.

The problem is all the games run significantly worse than if I leave it at stock 3.0ghz.

with the OC Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube) frame rate is only 10fps and is unplayable, but if I set my cpu back to stock I get a steady 30fps and the game runs good.

any ideas why a OC would cause dolphin to run slower?

Try a smaller overclock. It seems to me like it's actually overheating and downclocking itself.

Use Realtemp/coretemp to check CPU clock speed when dolphin is running

Sounds like an overheating issue. Yeah, check your temps like admin89 said.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, it is definately not over heating. at full load running Dolphin my temps only go up to about 47 under Realtemp

I figured out it has something to do with my memory timings. If I leave it on Auto and let the motherboard setup the timings it works and dolphin runs full speed at 3.6ghz overclocked, but the overclock is unstable and eventually crashes and resets the pc.

If I manually set the timings to the stock settings for this ram, then the overclock is stable but the games run really slow.

I'll have to play around with these timings and see if I can get it to work

Have you cleaned the thermal compound and replaced the new aftermarket one (Acrtic MX-4) yet ?
It's never recommended to OC on a stock cooler anyways . You have to buy an aftermarket heatsink then overclock
3.4GHz is a good start
Edit : Nevermind , 47 degree celcius on full load is fine

ya I'm using a Artic Cooling Freezer pro 7. Temps are good everything is good.

I can't get a stable overclock unless I manually set the correct memory timings for my ram. Everything works great when I do this except dolphin lol

now if I leave the memory timings on auto then Dolphin runs great but the overclock is unstable.

I'm trying to tweak some stuff right now and trying different timings but not having much luck.

Two people have suggested that you check your clock rate while running dolphin to verify that it is working correctly. I suggest it too. Have you done that yet?

Also what are your memory settings?

yes using cpuz it shows the correct clock speed.

already figured out the problem has to do with the ram memory timing. the timing for this ram is 5-5-5-18 @1.8v

using this timing and overclocking to 3.6ghz works stable, good temps, and correct clock speed in cpuz. but Dolphin runs really slow

using Auto timings in bios I think it's 5-6-6-18 or something like that makes the overclock crash and reset my computer but dolphin runs fast.

maybe it's my old motherboard (P5B Deluxe), maybe it's the hyperX ram, I don't know but it doesn't seem to like overclocking.

I thought I could get a little boost out of this old PC while I start buying parts to upgrade, but maybe I'll just leave it at 3.0ghz games run pretty good anyway I just wanted a little boost.
