The hardest part will be tracking down my one friend that still plays it with me and find a time we can both get on

If you can't find them and need someone, I can volunteer myself; I like me some SA2B.

Great report, always love the read. And thanks for the mention! It gives a warm, fuzzy feeling when you know your efforts don't go unnoticed.
Nice that Bighead is finally getting included in the monthly report, he certainly deserved that. His Custom Texture Tool alone already is worth an award, and without it I doubt a lot of texture packs would have come far.
Sadly, these months changes for custom textures (for example 5.0-8619 - Improve Custom Texture Wildcard Symbol) don't apply to N64 VC games. I checked and games such as Mario Kart 64 still continue to duplicate their textures. It mostly the menu textures that are being duplicated. Super Smash Bros. for the N64 and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (tested the Collector's Edition for the GC) still continue to dump the same textures in different tiled sizes. Super Smash Bros. does that with all the stage textures and Majora's Mask does it in the Deku Shrine, Pirate's Fortress and inside the graveyards at Ikana Graveyard. For example a texture could be dumped in 32x32, 32x64, 32x128, 64x64, 64, 128 and so on. And all these dumped textures are just the same texture but being tiled against another, repeating the same texture pattern. These same textures that are being dumped in different tiled sizes are finite (otherwise it wouldn't be doable) but still it seems to be a waste of system resources when it should only need the base texture. I believe the latest GlideN64 plugin for Project64 has the same issue these days. 09-02-2018, 08:36 PM

This doesn't fix them getting dumped multiple times (mostly because it is either very difficult or impossible to detect), it only allows you to use one file on disk to represent a multitude of textures in game.
The size might mean something different though, like the VC emulator doing things in an attempt to optimize etc. 09-04-2018, 04:34 PM

Apparently it's a bit of a thing to use Dolphin for netplay of N64 games and the like since Dolphin's netplay functionality is supposedly quite robust compared to other emulators, so running Not64 through Dolphin isn't as crazy as one would think.
Quote:Dolphin cannot detect whether or not Not64 is a Wii or GameCube executable because of the way it is packed and defaults to GameCube. That's quite unfortunate as I specifically had been thinking for a while now about using Not64 via Dolphin as an easy way to get motion controls ala Excite Truck/Mario Kart Wii in various N64 racing games, and Dolphin's "real wiimote" functionality is vastly easier to get working than the multitude of hoops that are required to get wiimote motion controls to work in native N64 emulators on PC. And yes I know you can work around the issue by launching via the HBC, but for whatever reason I've never been able to successfully import my Wii's NAND into Dolphin regardless of method.

You don't need to import the Wii NAND, just launch the Open HBC Wad from the gamelist and have Not64 on the SD card blob.

I haven't used the emulated SD card via Dolphin in a while - do the newest dev builds still require the use of a disk image file for the SD card rather than just putting files into a folder like what is done with PPSSPP or even Dolphin's own GCI folders?

I have my own custom Not64 wad that Dolphin can boot directly without needing the HBC. Would it be against the rules to share a download link for it? I created it by using CustomizeMii to inject Not64's .dol file into a USB Loader GX wad but other wads can work as well.
I have gotten Not64 to work in netplay with my friend, however games that are 24 MB or larger still don't boot up in netplay even if they boot up when I play offline, at least as of build 5.0-8596. |
