450 watts is ample, even for that. A more power hungry i7 960 @ 4ghz and a 6850 at full load consumes about 250 watts from the wall.

450watt is not ample for a 2500k, 6850, and a raid. get something 600+ with a gold or silver rating just in case u want to crossfire later.

Plan on building a new desktop this year, but I was hoping to use dolphin on my htpc, first. Current specs:

AMD Athlon II X3 Rana 445 3.1GHz (4th core unlocked to Phenom II X4 B45)
MSI 880GM-E43 AM3 AMD 880G Mobo
4GB DDR3 ram (PC3 10666)
520W Seasonic PSU
1TB Samsung Spinpoint HD
Integrated ATI Radeon HD 4250

I'm planning to add a better GPU, but am somewhat limited by size (htpc-style case). Was hoping to run games at higher res if possible (720, 1080). Also not wanting to spend too much (no more than $150-$200). Any suggestions?

at that price range, radeon 6770 or nvidia gt550 based should be more than enough (even for PC gaming @720p)
you can even get something lower than that
  • Intel Core i5 2500K @ 4.2GHz
  • MSI N560GTX-Ti Hawk
  • Asrock P67 Extreme4
  • 2x2GB 1600MHz 7-9-7-24
  • 2x500GB WD Caviar Blue Raid0
  • Windows 7 64bit SP1

Since a recent topic in this thread was power supplies I thought I would post my question here as well. I need a tower and a PSU, should I buy them together or separately? together would be cheaper however apart might benefit as far as upgrading and product quality.

For the rest of the PC I'll start off with something along the lines of i5-2500k processor, 2x7200rpm hard drives in RAID 0, 6770/5770/GTS450 Video Card, 2x4GB DDR3 RAM, P67/Z68 Motherboard...
It is possible that maybe one day i would want a second video card for Xfire/SLI. Also Overclocking is a possibility.

So, Tower and PSU together or separate? Thoughts?

Hey, guys. I'm getting a new laptop soon. I don't plan to Dolphin on it, but in case I eventually decide to use it for such matter, what kind of refrigeration should I use? Would I need a cooling pad? maybe something else I don't know about?

It will come with an i5 2410M (at 2.3ghz, I think) and a GT 540M, if that matters.

that's a bad rig option

better get 2500K + P67 board (cost the same with 2600 +H67)
you'll get more for your money

also, get better ram, certified for 1600MHz for sandy bridge system.
