Quote: I have not updated any of my drivers ever since I bought this computer and did the mandatory primary setup updates. Mostly out of fear that the newer drivers will not support older PC games that I still play and I don't want risk losing access to them by updating the driversidk how old your games are but most games work just fine in my case (like starcraft - 1998 , AOE II - 1999 ....) . Compatibility shouldn't be an issue , Windows 10 has compatibility mode You should use latest driver . If possible , upgrade your OS as well . Microsoft is offering Windows 10 for free via "Windows Update" (Control Panel - Windows Update) . Windows 10 has directx12 and it's much faster than Directx11 (Windows 7) Laptop: Mini PC :: 05-31-2016, 01:08 PM
I didn't think about that, but yeah. You should consider using Windows 10 so you can take *some* stress when emulating with Dolphin off of that ULV CPU. Since I don't know if that ULV is properly cooled or just has a shitty ultrabook fan, you can do a lot of good by using D3D12 which has a few tricks to allow better threading with the GPU emulation, taking *some* hard single core perf requirement away.

I was considering of upgrading to Windows 10, come summer vacations start for me, so I guess I should revisit this whole setup issue once I have done so. Will use this opportunity to also update all of the drivers, as adviced, as well, given the chance. Many thanks for the recommendations so far, everyone.
On an unrelated note, can someone offer me help on installing Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 redistributable (x64)? I have got the setup .exe but the installation never completes and thus I keep getting the 140.dll is missing error (and now a new one: api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-o.dll is missing error) whenever I try to use the latest emulation version, forcing me to use the 3.5-367 version. What is even going on here? :/ 05-31-2016, 01:40 PM
Your OS is probably either very behind on Windows updates or screwed up in some way. Upgrade to Windows 10 would fix your OS so you can properly install that redistributable.

The only problem with this solution is it means you are now using Windows 10. On a more serious note, making sure Windows Updates have been installed is important, as stated above, but you could also try chkdsk if that doesn't work. 05-31-2016, 02:31 PM

Yeah, for dolphin, do not use the *very* *very* old build 3.5-367. Don't use 4.0 either. Hint: www.dolphin-emu.org is the only valid site to download dolphin. There is also the link to the matching c++ redistributable package.
Awkward realisation: I had not tried the Compatibility mode solution that admin89 suggested. Promptly tried Vista Compatibility mode for the 4.0 version.
Well, waddaya know, not only did the latest version ACTUALLY work and open (it seems that the C++ WAS installed but compatibility issues prevented the emulator from reading the installed stuff), but also many of the game's glitches and lags have gone away, meaning it was simply an issue of outdated emulator versions...at least so far. We shall see how it will handle more demanding GC games, like Twilight Princess or Pokemon XD. (Although I would reckon that since it can run a Wii game like Castlevania Judgement, which IS pretty demanding, it can safely run such GC games as well, presumably without much issues.) Windows updating is still in consideration, of course, as I am sure I can't rely on one heavy game running well alone. x) |
