you do realize that dolphin was optimized for Intel right? and a consoles hardware compared to a pc's hardware is very different. But why would you even want to emulate a console on a console?

Do you realize that Dolphin also has Android build? Dolphin can run on non-Intel hardware too. The benefit of emulating a console on a console is clear as crystal to me but I can understand that some people don't get it.

Emulating consoles on handheld consoles is pretty awesome.

Otherwise, i'm not really sure.

Based on current requirements, rate of increase in requirements, rate of increase in singlethreaded cpu performance, and expected reduction in rate of increase of singlethreaded cpu performance I would expect that this will not happen for many years depending on your definition of "well". It would take a miracle for it to happen in 1-2 years.

That's not true at all. Dolphin is optimized for x86-32 and x86-64. It is not optimized for any specific cpu microarchitecture from either Intel or AMD.

Intel cpus run dolphin better because their design emphasizes traits that are more important to dolphin compared to the competition.

That depends on the console. The xbox, xbox one, and ps4 have hardware that is extremely similar to a PC. All of the important components are identical or nearly identical to a typical PC of that era.

Now if you were referring to the PS3 or xbox360 I might be a bit more inclined to agree with you. But you made a broad statement about all consoles.

This has already been discussed. It's extremely convenient.

Exactly. I mean who could see the value of Virtual Consoles or PS1 Classics? Certainly not enough people to create a sustainable business model.

As NV said, it's convenient for various reasons. Nintendo and Sony realized this as well and have begun to monetize emulation of select titles more heavily. Nintendo by far has been the most venturous in this regard (their library is massive, last time I checked). To me, it's still amazing that they can compete against free (you know, pirates and whatnot). People are still interested in emulating different consoles on other consoles, as the market suggests; that's not even counting the people who skip Nintendo and Sony for their own homebrew emulators.

It's interesting that some people in Dolphin forums, of all places, don't understand the benefit of emulating consoles on a console. On Virtual Console, a lot of consoles are emulated like NES, SNES, N64, Sega Master System, Mega Drive, etc.

I don't know the number of downloads as of today but it's over 10 million times as of 2007.

Because if it's popular it must be better than the alternatives, am I right? Tongue

I'm trying to say that if there is no benefit at all or if it's not useful to anyone, then nobody will use it and Nintendo will probably drop this product long time ago. I don't say that it's better than alternatives or not. Somebody may prefer to have NES, SNES, N64, Sega Master System, Mega Drive, etc. in their room or prefer to play games on their PC. It's their choice.

"It must have a benefit or it wouldn't be popular" Aw comeon, that's silly. Why not say the reasons, instead of making a vague connection like that? Here, I'll do it for you.

1. Convenience. People are always willing to buy something that would otherwise be free if it is more convenient. See bottled water.
2. Some games are emulated better on VC than on other emulators. Mario Tennis and Genesis titles, for example.

That's pretty much it. Most people don't care about the accuracy bit, so it all comes down to convenience. Of course, "standard" emulation has lots of pros going for it as well.

1. FREE
2. Playable on any device anywhere anytime, from phones to PCs to handheld gaming systems to TVs
3. Lots of extra options like online multiplayer, customizeable controls, cheat engines, graphical improvements, rom hacks, on and on
4. The complete catalog is available, not just a few handpicked titles like the VC
