Linux OpenGL drivers are just total crap. ATI, Nvidia, Intel - all are pretty poor. They just aren't given the proper attention and maintenance. The situation with laptop switchable graphics drivers is appalling from all 3 companies.
Another example: Firefox on Linux runs slower than on Windows... from what I understand, mostly due to the graphics drivers.
Linux is eventually moving away from X on the desktop for things like gaming. Wayland is the new approach...
Don't even get me started about the crap treatment most WiFi network hardware companies do with Linux...
