Open the task manager, open dolphin, does it remain on the task manager or disappear immediately?
Some Anti-malware program maybe preventing it from opening, try to sort that out.
......?????

it comes up on the task manager for a second under processes and then disappears after a few seconds. I dont have an anti-malware programs besides windows defender. I tried disabling that and still nothing. I just noticed that under where it shows all the running background programs on the bottom right of the desktop it says that dolphin.exe has stopped working

Shot in the dark, but is DEP enabled? A few others have had similar issues (not many though) and for whatever reason DEP was stopping Dolphin (although I was unable to repro).
