There's been a large amount of people like you complaining about mysterious crashes and complete lacks of working in the first place. Basically, unless dolphin were to make core dumps on crashes (I don't really know if it does), a lot of these crashes can't seem to be solved. They're really strange.

Though, question: do you happen to be using a fully-updated Windows 8.1? It seems to me that a lot of the people experiencing these crashes ARE on a fully-updated Windows 8.1. I also noticed that I'm not getting these crashes and I'm exactly one update from being completely up-to-date. It MIGHT have something to do with the latest update to Windows 8.1, some of these crashes. The rest, I don't know.

If you delete the common folder under your user documents and see if it fixes anything (back it up first, of course), that MIGHT be helpful. And, if it is helpful, it might be helpful to also bisect the version numbers to find which version the issue seems to start at, if it's related to a dolphin version.

Well, try 4.0.2 for me, see if anything's different. If it still hits a black screen, there might either be something wrong with dolphin's user folder thing, or something wrong with the OS itself.

I am having this *exact* same issue with my setup as well, only I'm using fully updated windows 7. I'm trying to play Fire Emblem: PoR, and the game just crashes on me and doesn't boot up. Using latest build (4.0.2), I"ve been prowling around the forums for a bit but haven't come up with a solution yet. As soon as I boot the game, it hangs for a bit, then I force close it with Task Manager (says app. "running" although nothing happens - screen stays black) when I try to boot the game again it instantly crashes.

Operating System: Windows 7 x64
Processor/CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-3570 CPU @ 3.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.8GHz
Video Card/GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series
Memory/RAM: 8GB G.Skill DDR3 PC3-12800 1500MHz "Ripjaw" Series
Dolphin Revision Currently Using: 4.0.2 x64
