I meant people asking about the performance of their CPU. The idea is to trade the people asking about their CPU performance for the few that would still ask how to find out what their CPU is, with the theory being that there's way fewer of the latter.

No matter what you do the majority of users aren't going to even know that this thread exists and will continue to make threads asking "how fast is X hardware?", "can I run X well?", and "how well can I run dolphin?". This has been repeatedly proven throughout this forums history.

I hardly ever use steam. I'm really not a big fan of Steam's "kinder and gentler" DRM, and will actually use cracks JUST so that I don't have to use steam to play a game. I greatly prefer how GOG does things, but I only recently found out about them.

Not only that, but I'm not much of a PC gamer, or at least a modern PC gamer. I'm much more of an arcade-style gameplay gamer, while the only non-arcade genres I really care for are sim-racers and exploration-heavy games (anything from Myst to Metroid Prime). However, most RPGs are a big no-no, even if they're heavy on exploration - the raw amount of numbers, stats, and variables makes my OCD go into overdrive to the point of not having fun.

I also am a fan of visual novels if you count those as games, though I personally prefer VNs without any real gameplay since VNs are my go-to source for reading-content (I don't count choosing plot-branches as gameplay).

In particular, when I'm in the mood for reading I just want to keep reading and not play a game, but when I'm in the mood for playing a game, I just want to play and not have to read a bunch - this also means I'm not a big fan of tons of cutscenes and hand-holding in games, to the point of even causing moderate dislike for Metroid Prime 3 even though I loved the first two to the point of buying Metroid Prime Trilogy on launch day. For the same reason, I refuse to touch Other M and Skyward Sword with a 10-foot meter pole.

And just for clarification, I'm not one of those people that doesn't read anything and just goes straight into the game. In fact I always look at the game options first and fiddle with the settings to perfection if I can, to the point of other people practically yelling at me to step messing around and get to the game. Also relevant, I actually loved the scanning mechanic and the log books in the Metroid Prime games, most likely because it was purely opt-in and controlled by you rather than a linear forced-onto-you "movie-esque plot device", and made it feel like you were discovering something yourself rather than just some story-cutscene telling you about it.

Neither am I. Though I don't mind it so much as long as you still remain in full control of your character during cutscenes. Unfortunately motion capture animation killed that off. Effectively making many games into barely interactive movies that switch between watching and playing constantly. Even so there are a llloooottt of good games worth playing on steam. Far more than I will ever have time to play.

I'm probably just spoiled by having a father and sister (and even mother depending on the game) that plays games, so console split-screen has pretty much always been my go-to for multiplayer.

I don't either, in fact it constantly frustrates me to see VNs marketed in western countries by mostly-Japanese companies as games. There's a reason they're stuck in a niche, perhaps they should pull an Elon Musk and actually listen to the detractors for once, specifically about those people complaining about the lack of gameplay and/or it not being a game? Of course, then they just try to make it more of a game and keep selling it as such rather than reversing the marketing and attack the ebook market... *le sigh*

At least Chunsoft supposedly gets it and plans to attack the iOS & Android ebook market with their own visual novels, though they seem to be dragging their feet...

I did go through your entire game list, and only two multiplayer games caught my eye:

Quake II
Unreal Tournament 2004

I own and played the N64 version of Quake II first, and that led me to the PC version. My best friend it a total hardcore PC gamer (he has a 4770k + 780 + 480GB M500 SSD) so I just borrowed the game disc from him, and since it's old enough to not have DRM and is completely portable, I just keep the game data around on various PCs. Heck I even modified the railgun texture to have a blue top so as to match how it looks on the N64.

And since the game is so old, I can run it on darned near anything, so I don't need to worry about if a PC is too slow to run it and therefore it's easy to have multi-PC multiplayer. Heck back in high school in 2006 when we finished our CAD assignments we always played Quake II against each other on the TastySpleen.net servers, and it was perfect since those PCs only had a single core 1.6GHz Pentium 4 and a 32MB Radeon 7000.

So technically we could play Quake II together. We could even play on the TastySpleen servers if you want more than just a couple people.


Also relevent, just last year I had signed up for GOG to buy Unreal Tournament 2004 for $5 in hopes of the game being a nice alternative to Quake II, but I don't know of any still-active online server like TastySpleen.net, so I've only played with bots...and I've yet to try a LAN game with it yet.


Oh yeah, also my lack of cutting-edge hardware kind of prevents me from playing a lot of modern PC games, though it's arguable that I lack said PC hardware because there aren't really any modern PC games I'm interested in.


Other random thing, I noticed you own Riven. I own the original CD versions of both Myst and Riven, and own RealMyst on Steam (I actually knew about GOG at that time but didn't have an account nor did I know they had RealMyst! It pisses me off, and I wasn't even the one that bought it - it was gifted to me). So I must ask, are you aware of the Starry Expanse project?:

And lastly, it's not really advertised on Steam, but Trackmania Nations Forever is the best free racing game I've ever played, though its online was much more active 5 years ago. And by free, I mean it's NOT "free-to-play", it's actually FREE. It was so good I bought the full version (United) which has more environments and allowed custom cars & avatars. Being a free game, it's also available as non-stream if you care, but here's the steam link anyway:

I find in far more cases it's the other way around. People get accustomed to just playing old games when they can't play newer ones because they don't have anything else to play.

I wonder how minecraft would run on that rig.

Double-heck, the game even ran fine back on my Athlon XP 2100+ @ 1.9Ghz w/ a 256MB Radeon 9600.

It does help however that I use a Trinitron CRT, so even using "only" 1280x720 @ 90hz with minimal AA looks great for most PC games (though I do try to use at least 8xAF if I can). For non-widescreen games I typically use 1024x768 @ 87hz, though the ability to natively display 800x600 @ 112hz and 640x480 @ 120hz is always there. (and is great for older games and visual novels)

Of course, being that I grew up with an N64, 20fps is playable to my eyes. At the same time however, being that I grew up with sub-20fps console games (GoldenEye particularly come to mind, though Perfect Dark definitely counts too), I greatly appreciate 60fps console games and get quite annoyed by modern games that use 30fps (or even 24fps) in exchange for more eye-candy. I mean, if TimeSplitters and F-Zero GX could run at 60fps even with a ton of computer players, then why the crap can't PS4 and Xbone games?!

Mmmm, I think there sould be mandatory lectures in high school about hardware and software. When I started to learn things by myself, I felt like I was illuminated with wisdom.

Three words: fog of war. I hate it. If you watched me playing Titan Quest or any RPG with fog of war, you would think I'm insane. Always running by the borders, trying to reveal all the map.

Hehe, that's just like me. First thing I do when playing a game for the first time is going to the options and configure everything. Then I play the game and usually get angry because the field of view is very narrow. Then I search all the game .ini I can find, and if I can't change the FOV there, I usually find another way (Widescreen fixer). And this is mandatory in any UE3 game: bSmoothFrameRate=false, because those games usually limit the fps to 62. Oh, and disabling any kind of mouse acceleration is also important (sadly there is no solution for Dead Space).
As you can see, many things can make me angry.

PC is the answer to your problems . And in case you didn't know, the 1964 emulator has an overclocking feature. Now you can play Goldeneye and Perfect Dark at glorious 60fps.
