I'm pretty sure my CPU can get most of the games I'm going to play at least almost fullspeed. My new computer is on its way here right now.
I got a bit of help on these forums because you guys. Thanks a lot. I actually had no idea that the model of the CPU was the numbers after the type. (ex. mine is a Core i5 2450M) I was looking at this stuff when picking out computers and it all seemed to be that it only told if it was a 1st gen, 2nd gen, or 3rd gen because all the 3rd gens had a 3k number after it, all the 2nd gens had a 2k number after it, etc. That's what I thought that number meant and therefore, when I was asked what the model was, I was stumped. But then you guys pointed me in the right direction. Thanks a lot.

Also, I feel I should say this. I may have acted "dumb" at first, but I actually have enough computer knowledge to confuse almost all people that I talk to around here. (I have a hard time discussing tech with my friends. Sad) I did learn some extra stuff to add to my knowledge when I came here. Thanks guys. I'm actually pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science, so new knowledge is always welcome. Smile

Considering the world is full of stupid people that's not particularly hard. You know you've reached a good point in your life when you can't talk about anything that isn't extremely boring to you without confusing people.

Good luck.

That's pretty much what has happened in the last 5 years.

I hear you. Most of the time now, I stay quiet.

I think I'll do fine. Smile I made straight A's in all my tech courses and AutoCAD classes. I actually find these subjects interesting. Smile

I can get an i3-2120+mobo or i5-760+mobo for about the same price. I know the 1156 mobo is a dead end. I'd like to play all GC and Wii games, but don't necessarily need the upscaling, interpolating, etc. Looking at an Nvidia GT 550 in either case.

Which of these is a better bet?

i5-760 -> 1st generation Intel core i series (Nehalem) -> Can overclock
i3-2120 -> 2nd gen ( Sandy Bridge) -> Can't overclock
i3 3220 -> 3rd gen (Ivy Brdge) -> Can't overclock
Pentium G2120 -> 3rd gen (Ivy Bridge) -> Can't overclock

Note :"Can't overclock " = it can overclock but not by much so i write "can't overclock" instead

i5 is a quad core , it's the fastest CPU here but dolphin is a dual core app (+1 core with "LLE on thread")
Dolphin performance (at stock speed) : i5 760 ≤ i3 2120 < G2120 < i3 3220
Dolphin performance (Overclocked i5 @ 3.8GHz or higher ) : i5 760 ≥ i3 3220 > G2120 > i3 2120

Overall , choose 1 of these options :
1) Save more money and get i5 3570k + Z77 mobo and then overclock it to 4.2GHz
2) Get either i3 3220 or G2120 + B75 or Asrock Z77 mobo (Asrock Z77 mobo can overclock "non-k CPU" , B75 can't)
3) Get i5 760 + G55 mobo and then overclock it to 3.8GHz or higher

Thanks for the info. It's not that I don't have the money, but rather I don't want to spend the money on going with a 3xxx ivy bridge. I have a softmod'ed Wii if I really can't get dolphin the way I want it. Trying to keep things ~$300 total (already have some parts). Looks like the i3-3220 is a good bet.

Is the GT 550 the recommended budget card?

GTX 650 is cheap , faster , latest GPU (Kepler 28nm) and run cooler
As for PSU , this one will do

I assume you meant power supply? I've built several desktops in the past, and am comfortable with the tech. Dolphin is new to me, and less straightforward. I'll look up the 650 Smile

I plan on going with a less expensive mobo, since it'll be used for Hyperspin and not much else.
