Grrr. Yeah. I've seen users run into bad host before; but I really don't have any idea what causes it or how to fix it.

If you want to use netplay with people who aren't also in the dorm (i.e. on the same LAN as you), being in a dorm will make it impossible for you to host a netplay session. The other person will have to forward ports to let you connect, unless that other person also lives in a dorm, in which case netplay with that person is impossible. Living in a place where somebody else controls the networking environment leaves you with many insurmountable networking limitations.

UDP netplay works for most people in a dorm. That's why this is unusual.

Both TCP and UDP require port forwarding to allow inbound connections, so I don't see how it could work if you don't have access to open ports on every router in the network chain...

Hi, thanks for the reply!

The thing about what you say, is that I can connect with the laptop, just not with the desktop. I haven't tried hosting after we've made it work with my partner hosting, so I can't actually say whether I could do that. While you may be correct about the hosting part, I still don't understand why there would be a difference between the two PCs with dolphin set up the same.

EDIT: Also a thank you to JMC47 for the continued replies. While my issue may not have been resolved through it, I'm glad someone is trying to help me. Smile

EDIT 2: I don't know if you saw, Aleron Ives, but I also mentioned earlier that I had tried using my phone as modem, which is a completely different network - didn't solve it either. That's why I'm thinking it's some sort of hardware issue, even though I don't understand what it could be. Or maybe it's related to settings in dolphin, but all the settings I can find, are completely identical to how I've set it up on my laptop.

If it's just with the desktop... I really don't know. It's actually interesting to know that it's per computer because I had been thinking prior to this that the problem would be per router.

Ah, I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear enough! Yeah, it's per computer, I've been playing just fine on the laptop. I don't think I've tried hosting yet on the laptop, but I can definitely connect without issue. I think I said before as well, that when I tried running it locally (using internal IPs given by the router) the laptop was able to connect to the desktop, but not the other way around.
