Hi everyone,

I've just started using dolphin to try playing Project M, and I've built version 3.5. However, when I try to host a game on netplay, instead of the number I'm supposed to give to my opponent, it just says "Error: Bad host" instead.

I've tried googling for everything I can think of now, but I can't come up with a solution.

I've used this guide* to set it up. When doing the exact same thing on my laptop, I receive the code and can successfully connect to others, but on my desktop I just get the error no matter what.

I've tried running different versions of Dolphin, running it as administrator, moving the ISO around on my PC to different locations, disabling firewall (even though I use the same one on my laptop) and even tried using my smartphone as a modem instead of my regular connection. The laptop uses the same connection as the desktop, only difference being that the laptop is on wireless. They connect to the same router though.

One thing I can think of could somehow be related (although I don't think it's very likely that it is), is that I did create a save file for project M, before I found out I was not supposed to. I did what was instructed where I read about it (I forget exactly where that was) to delete the save file again however. Further, there was not at any point anything saved when I launched the game again anyway. The netplay problem persists if I try hosting for Brawl instead as well, but these are the only games I have right now for reference. I've tried removing everything I could locate on my PC related to Project M and Dolphin, and redownloaded and done over everything. No luck.

If anyone has ANY ideas, I'd appreciate your time, as I am completely out of creative solutions. I've searched around on google as mentioned, and on this forum as well, and the only thread I've found suggested disabling the firewall. Thanks in advance everyone.

Try latest master build, as it has the most compatible netplay features. get it here: https://dolphin-emu.org/download/

UDP Netplay's port breaking isn't guaranteed to work and is a third party branch.

Thanks for the replies!

KHg8m3r, when you say master build, does that mean stable version? If so, I've tried 4.0.2, and am not having more luck with that unfortunately.

JMC47, I don't quite know what UDP is, sorry. If you mean that someone not specifically related to the dolphin project does the netplay stuff, then perhaps you could point me to this person / group? I may be completely misunderstanding you.

Master build refers to anything in the master branch of Dolphin, be it a stable build or a development build. While 4.0 stable was part of the master branch (4.0.2 stable technically wasn't because of silly and complicated reasons), it's up to about 4.0-4200 right now. The latest development build is much, much faster and much, much more accurate than the stable builds, and is also faster and more accurate than the latest build in the netplay branch, even for netplay.
OS: Windows 10 64 bit Professional
CPU: Intel i5 4670K @3.4GHz... for now @4.6GHz with a quick and dirty (yet stable) OC. May get faster in a bit before the end of time.
RAM: 16GB (Down from 24 GB after some was given to siblings)
GPU: Radeon Vega 56

AnyOldName3: I see, thanks a lot for the explanation.

I went and tried downloading the newest version in the master branch, and netplay seemed to work (mind you, I'm only able to test with my laptop as my "partner" at the moment because my friend who I have trouble connecting to is not online), however - I had no visual, just a black screen. So I went back to version 4.0.2 to check if I still had video when using that version, and I did - and what's more, it appears that netplay MAY work on there now. I was able to connect with my laptop, but this is of course over LAN, using the same router.

I will report back when I have been able to test with someone who is not on my LAN.

There was still an issue here though - I was able to host on the desktop and have the laptop connect to it, however I was not able to do it the other way around. There must be something "blocking" the desktop somehow, I just can't figure out what it could be (keep in mind I know absolutely nothing about networking).

Thanks again for the replies, and I will update when I have been able to test further.

Have you set up port forwarding?

I haven't, I kind of assumed that wouldn't be the issue since my laptop was able to connect to others. Again, I know nothing about networking, so I may be completely wrong on this.

I can forward on my router, but as I live at a dorm there's an external router of some sort, to which I have no access.

I did try, as mentioned, with my mobile connection to try to determine whether my connection was the issue, but that didn't solve anything. That, along with the fact that my laptop was able to connect, made me conclude that it probably wasn't the connection.

Update: I have now tried various newer versions of Dolphin, and for some reason I have no video in any of the ones I've tried. I still do in 4.0.2 though.

I've forwarded the port (2626) on my router, with no change. I'm really at a loss as to what is making my desktop behave this way, but not my laptop, one the same network.

Is there any saved files for settings and stuff, for dolphin or games that have been run on it, that I may not be finding? I'm thinking I may have somehow changed some settings, so it'd be easiest to maybe remove EVERYTHING related to it completely and start over.

Well, it can be a firewall issue, or another program could be hogging ports... but yeah; I don't know why it would do it if the laptop works.
