So I heard that the backend is important for 'speed gain', but is this 'speed gain' in terms of less load on the graphics card or CPU - or both, possibly? It's the same question I have with using AA, really.

Thanks

No, the DX9, DX11, GL blackends. Smile

The AA (anti-aliasing) question was just a side question, really. It normally doesn't effect the CPU much, if at all, but this is an emulator after all.

OpenGL --> Direct3D11 --> Direct3D9

OpenGL is the slowest, Direct3D9 the fastest backend.

Yes, I'm aware of that. But that doesn't really answer my question. Smile

Which part of a computer does the blackend OpenGL, fx, slow down, compared to, say, the DX9 blackend? Does it put more stress on the CPUs and/or the graphics card, specifically.

Edit: I did some testing myself and with the openGL blackend with x4 AA applied then it does indeed *seem* to put more load on the CPUs, too. Because the FPS drops noticeably and the GPU is only at 50% load. I guess this answer one of own questions, if my findings are correct, that is.

Gotta go to work, so I don't have time to give you a full answer. Check out this thread, it might answer your question. The short answer, I think, is that no, it doesn't really put more load on the CPU. The FPS drop is due to the GPU's not being able to handle higher settings (AA, Internal Resolution), which could slow down the video thread, and Dolphin overall. I'm in a hurry atm, so I could be wrong.

opengl might have highe cpu usage due to threaded optimisations.... if you're using nvidia that is.

Yes cpu load should be different between different backends. However it shouldn't be a huge difference.
