Do classic controllers work and how to configure?

Let's take this example. I want to play Smash on 3 player. I have a Gamecube controller configured as player 1, and a real Wii remote as player 2. If I put a classic controller on the Wii remote, would I be able to use that as player 3 while player 2 uses the Wii remote?
