The more players you have the slower it will be. Dolphin is constantly taking input data and recompiling. The more inputs you have the more recompiling it needs to do and the slower it will run.

oh really? the slowdown in multiplayer has to do with input? I didn't think input would give the emu much to do...I thought it's just because of the 3-4 Splitscreens which of course alltogether have more going on than one screen.

Yep. You can test it yourself by using more/less players and noting the difference in performance.
I thought super smash bros. games don't use splitscreen for multiplayer? Edit: Ok shuffle says I'm wrong on this so apparently it's just because more "stuff" is going on with more players.
