here's hoping i'm in the right area, super sorry if i'm not! but it felt more support than hardware;;;

helloo~ so i've been trying to google about for a solution for a few hours now and figured i'd just bite the bullet and make an account!

so i've been doing my best to get dolphin to work - and it did! sort of. the stable 5.0 version worked in the sense it opened, games could be played, so on and so forth. but my switch pro controller - the sticks wouldn't be recognized. the right stick was like - recognized but only the y axis, the x axis was completely dead as far as dolphin was concerned. and as far as dolphin was concerned! the left stick didn't exist at all. so that little issue lead me to find some people saying that's because i just need one of the recent development versions of dolphin and i'll be all set because they recognize the analog sticks for the switch pro controller! great!

except i can't get a development version to open :/ i've tried like seven different ones ranging from the most recent to i think 5.0-6414 was the earliest i tried. maybe i'm not going back far enough? but it felt really exhausting and pointless to just keep randomly clicking development versions.

what happens is i download, and when i try to open the .dmg file my computer is all "hey this isn't compatible, check with the developer to make sure your version of osx can handle this program!" which i don't super see a way to do? which honestly might be the issue, but i've been avoiding updating to high sierra because i have a bunch of programs i'm concerned i'll lose access to if i do. i'm currently running 10.10.5 Yosemite, and like i know macs are notorious for just not working when video games are involved but i was hoping someone might have an idea as to what's up? or what i can do? if it's just my osx is out of date i mean i guess that's all there is to it, but i mean just the confirmation that yeah that's the issue would be nice!

thanks in advance for any advice!

Apple provides major OS upgrades for free now. Update your system. If you have no updates available, open the App Store and search for "High Sierra". That should give you the installer.

no no i'm aware, but i have programs that i'm concerned won't work anymore if i upgrade to high sierra so if like possible i'd really rather not update to high sierra. i mean if it ends up being that is for sure my problem?? i might consider it or just put dolphin on the back burners for now but; i'd really like the keep the functionality of some of the things i have right now.

What programs are you afraid of that might stop working in a newer OS?

Or set up Bootcamp with Windows 10 x64 and enjoy the better performance and better drivers for gaming.

it's mainly my photoshop elements program. i'm an artist and i sooort of need it to still work but it's relatively outdated as it is and i'm genuinely surprised it runs as well on 10.10.5 as it does, so to upgrade to 10.13 is like concerning y'know? and from what i've been reading my pse & even newer pse's aren't playing super nice with 10.13 :/

i've been considering bootcamp! but a lot of the research i was doing like cited reduced performance capabilities so i was unsure?? if it was gonna be like worth the strain on my poor laptop. but i'll def like start poking into it again now that i've got a more solid reason.

Heavens no.

Bootcamp will give you *significantly better* performance in Dolphin because we aren't hamstrung by Apple's deprecated and abandoned GL frontend in another OS.

Depending on what version of PSE you have it could indeed pose a problem, but the latest version (PSE2018) on an intel Mac doesn't have any issues at all.

added system requirements for all PSE's: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/system-requirements.html

Also, Bootcamp will not lower performance of any of your applications in OSX, it will however use some hard drive space so be aware about that.
As an added benefit you will learn that all applications you probably need have a Windows version, which is JUST AS FAST WITH THE SAME FUNCTIONALITY as your OSX version of it. If you are not able to find a Windows version of an application, there usually is a (better/free) alternative. An extra benefit for you would be: the next time you will buy a computer you probably buy a PC instead of a MAC, because for about 80% of the price you will get a better and faster laptop/desktop machine than Apple can offer!

As an example I tried to recreate the most decked out and expensive Apple iMac Pro 2018 (was about $13.750 dollar, store went down while checking)

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/JWMvnH > is the PC equivalent, it has a faster processor (Base clock and turbo), faster ram (because of lower CAS Latencies), faster SSD's (especially if you raid-0 them you would have about 6.5GB/s max throughput), A bigger and higher resolution screen (27" 2880p vs 31.5" 4320p). Comes with the widely accepted MS Office 2016 PRO and Windows 10 Pro 64bit and Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 (couldn't list it because PCpartpicker doesn't have 2018, but the Adobe site says $99.99 USD for a Full License) and if you wanted you could even overclock the CPU and GPU for more speed!

Price: $12390.54 (added the price for PSE2018 to it)

That is about 10% cheaper for a faster/better machine, and that difference goes up the cheaper the systems get.

Yeah, but comparisons like this always miss something - like being a *completely* different form factor, the time of having to put it together, different software (some people actually like MacOS! Weirdos....), not as wide color range screen and less bright screen, no quibbles return warranty (which is a big deal for many corporations - where the time taken to fix/replace a broken device adds up for high-paid professionals sitting on their thumbs).

(EDIT: And it doesn't have ECC ram. Which makes it an instant "no" for many fields that actually require correctness Smile

Yeah, *I* don't really like Macs, but I can see the appeal, they're not just a "dumb person's choice".

Except their opengl driver. That's dumb.
