Honestly if a 7850 is enough the OP could just use a r7-265 or a 750ti. Nothing higher is really worthwhile if you just need 4k for whatever reason.
Desktop upgade, CPU/GPU?

So even a Radeon 280x can get 4K on OpenGL. Am also planning to get a 4K TV which is the new Vizio P Series, and am planning to wait for Radeon r9 390x not just for dolphin but for PC games too. If a graphics card can already render at 4x Internal Resolution shouldn't it already be ready for 4K on Dolphin? Just add 8xAA 09-22-2014, 01:54 PM
Thanks for your input guys, upgrade phase one now underway with an i7 4790K and new mobo going in today. GTX 980 to come in a couple of weeks, by which time the ASUS Strix 980s should be available (will grab one now for Dolphin and a second later for some PC gaming).
Only thing I'm deciding on still is whether to go for the ASUS ROG 1440p G-sync monitor, or wait a little for the Acer 4K G-sync monitor... May go the 1440p for the short to medium term (will be better with a single 980 running the show initially anyways I guess), and then grab a 4K G-sync monitor later when they start arriving at lower prices (at which point the 1440p monitor will be a nice upgrade for my workstation at work). 10-08-2014, 07:56 AM
Once again, thanks for your help gents - got my EVGA Superclocked ACX 2.0 GTX 980 this morning. Wow. Just wow. Had a quick blast of F-Zero GX at 4x IR 4xFSAA 16xAF, in game basically locked to 60fps. Wonderful.
