Desktop PC to run the Galaxy games with plenty of headroom

I was under the impression from another thread that exclusive mode needs a really beefy setup but a 1060 is very reasonable. Maybe a 1070 to give some headroom and higher IR? It would be great to take advantage of supersampling although I guess AA might be nearly as good and a lot less expensive..

I used 2x SSAA back in the day on Xenoblade on a GTX 770, and that was before Vulkan. Without SSAA, my GTX 770 could easily push dolphin in 4k if I wanted to.

And this says a 1060 is much faster.


Dolphin's GPU requirements do not line up with typical PC games. 4k in a PC game is a lot harder to do than 4k in Dolphin.

My thinking is, though, might not that performance demand increase exponentially when running ubershaders in exclusive mode as I want to do? This is from the Dolphin Github a couple of weeks ago:

The relevant part is what's mentioned about exclusive mode:

So I'm thinking that as I want to use that mode, wouldn't I need the most powerful machine possible, especially if I want to use SSAA?


If so, I guess the other option might be to just wait a bit until ubershaders have got more efficient and less power hungry.  The other alternative seems to be just to use hybrid mode for now which apparently works pretty well and with less of a performance hit.

I wonder how demanding Hybrid mode is and what the ideal setup would be for running say the Galaxy games at 4K in hybrid mode - would anyone know this? I think that might be the best option.

If you want exclusive mode above 1080p with SSAA, yeah I might look at a 1070 or higher. Honestly, I'm not aware of anybody with a super powerful GPU testing ubershaders with those kinds of settings, so I don't know what kind of GPU you would need.

Also note that the beefier your GPU is, keeping it cool *and* quiet might get harder in a mini ITX case

Thanks Helios, much appreciated. Like you say, now I'm going with something more powerful it makes sense to use a full sized case. And as it'll be quite a bit more expensive it makes sense to have it as a general gaming PC rather than just a dedicated Dolphin box.

Console(ish) sized sff case.  Though for the look you will have to give up some things.  1. You need silverstone's power supply since a standard atx will not fit.  2. It only fits a 13" graphics card.  3. SFF cases are a pain to work on since there is much less space.

I’m glad to report that the SFF case is more than capable of disposing all the heat produced by the GTX1080 and, using the slim Silver Stone AIO, the high clocked i5 stays fresh.

As you can see in the second shelf, there are a pair of HDMI matrices and a pair of HDBaseT extenders. All this stuff is in a secondary storage room and transmits HDMI signal to the living room and to the bedroom.


Going back to the topic, the cheap wire Ikea shelf allow a lot of air circulation under the SilverStone case and this is a plus with this tiny SFF case.
SilverStone RVZ01B is designed to be a positive air pressure case: all fans should act as air intake pushing air inside. The case has a ventilation grille on the upper side (you can see in the picture) used for the CPU cooling (I put the AIO radiator directly on the intake and the fan under the radiator sucking air from the outside) and two other ventilation grilles on the lower side (plus a third grille for the PSU). I put two 15x120mm fans (included with the case) on the lower grilles pushing fresh air from outside directly on the GPU. The GPU is in a compartment partially separated from the rest of the case and, with this design, it is preferred to use axial/blower style GPUs.

I really like the case - it looks good with that general setup as well. Although now I'm going with a more powerful PC I'll probably go with a full tower as I don't have the experience to guarantee that putting all that power and heat in a small case will work out. So all PCs should be positive pressure? Is that to keep dust out or is the cooling more efficient?
