Thanks again Helios for your advice. I can't wait to get this up and running!
Desktop PC to run the Galaxy games with plenty of headroom

Console(ish) sized sff case. Though for the look you will have to give up some things. 1. You need silverstone's power supply since a standard atx will not fit. 2. It only fits a 13" graphics card. 3. SFF cases are a pain to work on since there is much less space. 07-14-2017, 03:51 PM
I'd recommend the 1050 ti over the 1050 to meet the headroom requirement. Also, it is possible to run into stuttering or dropped frames with aggressive AA settings on some games even with a 1050 ti. Personally, I wouldn't get too hung up on the anti-aliasing; it won't make a significant visual difference on a 46" screen unless you sit closer than around 6 feet. Skyward Sword (to pick an obvious example) benefits a great deal as the resolution increases to 1080p, but the anti-aliasing benefit is greatest at low resolution and diminishes as resolution increases.
Not saying you will have a performance problem, but if you do try turning down the AA, or turn it off completely.
Why? They were looking for a cheap dolphin system.
A Ti won't net them much more beyond a higher price tag when it comes to Dolphin. I agree though that tons of AA doesn't gain them too much. Usually 2-4x MSAA is enough and a 1050 can do that just fine in Dolphin. 07-14-2017, 07:38 PM

Thanks guys, Thinking about it and seeing the advice here, maybe I should go with a mini-itx case that's a touch bigger as trying to go overly small sounds like trouble.
Helios - I just had a thought - would you mind suggesting the other quieter power supply that you had in mind? Just asking as I'm set on keeping the unit as quiet as possible. I can get silent fans for the case no problem, but to keep the noise to a minimum would I have to buy quiet versions of the CPU and GPUs you listed? Is there a specific brand to go with for the quietest versions of the Pentium G4560 and the GTX1050 or are the ones you put in the Partpicker list plenty quiet enough themselves? 07-15-2017, 12:17 AM

I figured there was some money to play with, forgetting that the OP also said they were looking to spend the least amount possible. When I first built my Dolphin box, I found a good deal on the 1050 ti and went with that over the 1050. It felt to me like it was the minimum necessary for what I was doing -- some difficult titles at 1080p, with varying levels of AA. The DX12 backend was still available then and I got the performance I was looking for with it, but switching to other backends meant having to turn down (or turn off) my preferred AA settings. I ended up replacing the 1050 ti with a 1060 because I changed my display to a 4K TV, and the 1050 ti couldn't handle the resolution with my favorite games and preferred resolutions. I guess I would still recommend the 1050 ti only because the OP specifically said they wanted headroom. As I recall the price difference was only $20 or $30 for me, due to the deal I found. I don't know if they're still that close. 07-15-2017, 05:02 AM

OK I think I've come across a bit of a game changer. One of my favourite aspects about Nintendo games is that they often tend to run 100% flawlessly.
In the past, the only issue that's put me off Dolphin slightly is the microstuttering from loading shaders people talk about. I know there's been talk about Ubershaders for a while, but it looks like this is finally coming to fruition. I read about it in this thread: Link (Apologies, I'm sure there are people with better knowledge here but this is just where I found the news). Apparently the full effect needs quite a bit more power. From the thread: "The settings are under enhancements. Off, Hybrid, Exclusive. Off is self explanatory. Hybrid uses ubershaders only when fast shaders aren't available. This results in reduced/no stuttering on smart drivers. NVIDIA drivers decide to lock while compiling shaders, so this offers just less stuttering on NVIDIAs. Especially on OpenGL. Exclusive - Huge performance down, but this will kill all stuttering on decent drivers. Again, NVIDIA doesn't play nice with this on OpenGL. On Vulkan, after it compiles a few variants, it will be 100% smooth. D3D seems to work perfectly under exclusive on NVIDIA Just remember, exclusive requires some pretty beastly graphics cards. My GTX 1070 gets 4x IR in D3D, 2 - 3x IR in OpenGL/Vulkan on exclusive" This changes things for me - if it means I can completely avoid stuttering then I'd happily get a GTX1070 to have that. Perhaps I should to hold back and see how this Ubershader thing pans out? 07-15-2017, 06:15 AM
If you're interested in Ubershaders, this is one of the cases where yes, you want a powerful GPU.
AMD's drivers actually shine here. They don't lock up the rendering thread while compiling shaders. Unfortunately, AMD doesn't have a current gen GPU out yet that is stronger than a GTX 970. However Nvidia on Vulkan/D3D locks very little. It's up to you what you value here 07-15-2017, 06:29 AM
Personally I think the stuttering issue with shaders is overblown. I was really concerned about it myself before building my Dolphin box. But now that I've been running for a while I realize it was hardly worth my concern. It's only an issue until they're compiled the first time, and then not again until you do something requiring them to be recompiled, like install a new version of Dolphin. Pick a build and stick to it while you're playing through a game. I'm on a 2 or 3 month old build right now because I'm playing through Skyward Sword.
Even if you do update Dolphin, the stuttering isn't nearly as bad as you're imagining. It's a momentary thing and doesn't really impact gameplay. It happens now and then when new shaders are compiled, and then it stops happening until you decide to update Dolphin again. Honestly I hadn't even thought about stuttering at all in the past few weeks until you brought it up here. Not saying the Ubershaders won't be cool, but based on my experience the benefit hardly seems worth the cost. The 1070 is more than triple the cost of a 1050 and double the cost of a 1060. I can't see why I would spend $420 on a video card to fix a problem I haven't actually noticed in weeks. If budget is a concern, I'll suggest you get a 1050 or 1050 ti and try it out for a week or two, playing through an actual game. Don't do something which would cause the shaders to have to recompile. Then decide whether spending another $250-300 on a 1070 makes sense for you. |
