My reason for choosing amd alone is price. I dont have 1000 Bucks lying around to get 19fps more out of a game when i can take a 300$ cpu and OC it to get maybe 9 FPs less. TBH i think intels prices are BS. But hows that phrase go "YOu get what you pay for"

Those two processors are similar in value, but shouldn't he go for whatever brand his motherboard supports?

Yeah but i was going on about what they was talking about.

I'm sorry but amd certainly has a long way to go if their 6 core processors can't beat intel's measly 4 core.
And you say its price over performance but do you mean in general, or in this case, because clearly that 6 core costs a bit more, and evidently the 4 core prevails.

The same reason I got my 720, I was merely saying that we got those black edition and all good performing cpu for cheap is partly (mainly?) because of Intel. Tongue

Quote:Sorry, like I said check again various site on the net, majority of people, sans fanboy, will agree that overall (except in certain case) Intel is faster than AMD and of course, pricier.

Then prove it. When thuban came out I immediately started scouring the web for reviews and benchmarks on it. Tomshardware, anandtech, guru3d, all show it kicking the crap out of all intel cpus except the $1,000 gulftowns. That statement may have been true a year ago but thuban is definitely overall better than anything intel has to offer in the <$1,000 price range right now. Go on any reliable benchmarking or tech news site or any overclocker forums and you'll see for yourself.

Anandtech compared the two in professional benchmarks, and gaming & 3d-rendering wise the low-end i7's do beat the 6-core phenom-x6 thuban procesors.

However due to it's low price point, I'm considering the thuban on my htpc for blu-ray rendering in the next upgrade cycle.
It offers very good value per dollar in contrast to intel products in the same processing power category.

Extreme edition processors aren't value purchases. You buy them if you have, like you said, a thousand bucks lying around. Value is buying a 860 or 920/30 & overclocking it to 4.0ghz on air to achieve the near exact performance.
I only bought i7 950 because I had the extra lying around, and it offers slightly better overclocking ability. That's not to say that a 950/965/even 980x aren't value; Depends entirely on what you use your computer for.

But for casual use, a phenom II x4 or a i7 920 are more than enough to run any game and application at full speed enjoyably, and have multitasking to go with it.

Er, are you talking about the 1 or 2 non-free programs that use CUDA, which is a nVidia product ? GPGPU is just starting to be used by a few professional apps and very few video encoders (2 at my knowledge : TMPGEnc and Badaboom), and again you need a nVidia video card since AMD/ATi hasn't been talking of GPGPU for quite a long time... If you're interested in video encoding, buy a good proc.
If you want to play, go buy an i5/i7, they're much better than Phenom II in gaming.

There is a Video Encoder in ATI drivers for a month or so , that uses your GPU , it s in the control panel (ccc) in the drivers .

When comparing these two cpus in dolphin all that matters is clock rate. And a thuban can clock a lot higher than an I7 can.

I highly doubt he's doing professional 3d rendering with a ray tracing engine. Yes an I7 will beat a thuban in those clock for clock because most ray tracing engines use HT. However look at the second page. The fact that they perform so close to each other in every non synthetic benchmark test when running at the same clock rate (if you factor in turbo boost) should show you something, you should look at an overclocked benchmark, that's where thuban really shines.
