My system's just not flexible enough then. Two problems: I need to able to work on my battery for at least 2 hours at a time (after some tweaking it lasts 3 and a half to 4 hours now), and I've got an OEM BIOS from Acer. I can't even switch off the horrible beep it makes when I connect the adapter.

My god. I thought for sure this would end if I left for awhile. Whatever, I might as well keep it going for the lolz.
Quote:Thats true, but Unreal Tournament 3 uses 4 cores, add in antivirus(which usually tries to run on it's own core to minimize CPU impact), that would be 5 cores to operate well. and one can easily overclock an AMD to 4.0ghz, sometimes on factory cooling, but will an Intel go to 4.0ghz on cooling other that a $200 heatsink or a liquid cooled rig? The answer is NO, it will overheat on you before it makes 4.0ghz. BS. Unreal tournament is capable of gaining a very small boost from a third core (25% increase in speed at best) and who the f**k has av running while they're gaming!?!? Well said. I especially like your comparison of fanboys to people that have "been sent on a holy crusade to stamp all disbelievers that come in their way." I think this is just inevitable human nature. Fanboys exist for the same reason that the crusades existed, as humans we have a tendency to break off into groups and conflict with each other. AMD users and intel users become kind of like a cultural group, especially in OCer forums. That's just my opinion though. I agree with his choice of a 945 though, I just thought he was choosing between those specific two cpus (phenom II x6 and core i7) so I argued my point for thuban being better for what he wanted to do with it. Since I thought he wanted to know which of those two he should choose and he was using this thread as a tie breaker. I'm probably going to upgrade from my Q6600 when sandy bridge comes out. Have to wait until review sites start benchmarking it before I can make a decision though. With avx it should be able to achieve double the performance per clock of i7 in dolphin.

Won't the new instruction need to be specified first by Dolphin for its to be beneficial or will it automatically used? And Bulldozed will also get it iirc so we're ready for another war

yup. i'm getting a phenom ii x6 with 5850 2gb card. intel hexa-core is too expensive for me. i already have an old intel quad core. i don't want another quad. my current rig is about 2 years old. i feel the itch to build a new system.

AVX is basically SSE5 but for some reason intel decided to give it a different name. But from what I understand avx can achieve twice the flops/clock for any floating point intensive applications (which dolphin is) that formerly used SSE4.1/4.2. I'll post some more info. about it when I get out of class.

What I mean is will Dolphin automatically USE avx as even SSE3 and up need a special build of Dolphin in order to get performance increase.

Well from what I understand, and this is passing into the realm of things that I don't understand really well so I might be wrong, the compiler is responsible for optimizing the machine code for sse automatically, so I would assume with avx you would just compile the same code with a new version of visual studios and vs would take care of it for you. As I said though, I will honestly admit I know little to nothing about this since it's not in my realm of expertise.

If my guess are correct there are hand-written optimization directly tied with the core of Dolphin and there's also compiler specific optimization but both need to be specified first before Dolphin can take advantage of it.
cmiiw, hope someone well versed in this subject come along and enlighten us |
