It was called "virtual" at one time. And yes efb copy to texture is technically a hack but his sentence still doesn't make sense with that in mind. He seems to be implying that "the hack" (whatever that is) is the problem (the cause of the slowdown), which wouldn't make sense. Perhaps he miss typed something.
