CPU fan running at full speed!

I replaced the fan for a coolmaster cpu fan. I thought I was buying only the cpu fan but it came with a heatsink too. This is the fan. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103188 (Note how it says 'fan only').

I switched out the fan because the old one squealed.

No matter what I do in the bios it constantly runs at full speed. The fan speed settings work fine for the case fans, and I even plugged this cpu fan into one of the system slots and it had a reduced speed.

CPU is at 32c.

I flashed the bios.

I installed speedfan but that didn't seem to recognized any of the fans and showed no detail.

I'm really out of ideas.

Urrrghhhh, Just realized I switched a 4 pin fan for a 3 pin fan.

Why would they even sell a cpu fan with 3 pins?

40 mins later, lots of leaning about pwm, I see what's up now.

Just change the voltage. Either through the motherboard (if it supports it, use a chassis fan port), a resistor cable (cheap and widely available online), or a standalone fan controller.

I think I'm going to start charging you for my advice here....

Haha, yeah I have a series of forums I use to ask computer questions, like 4 and they all get a turn. Think how bad it would be if I used the Delfino Plaza solely!

I still need the fan to be controlled by the cpu temperature, but a compatible 4 pin fan doesn't seem to exist. And it seems that all the aftermarket heatsinks would be too tall for my case or poorly rated.

Luckily a guy who I was speaking to had a heatsink and fan that came with a similar processor that he never used which he sent me for postage costs so hopefully that'll work well.

They exist. I don't know where you've been looking where they don't exist.

I really do use google. In this case I was convinced that the fan I removed was 3 pin. GIGO was the result of my googling.

There's plenty of 70mm fans. But finding one specifically to attach to the heatsink is a different story.

Actually, I should have said most of the best rated ones may have been too tall for my case. However in the middle of looking the guy said he'd send me one out just for shipping costs so you can't beat that deal. Should be here monday.

Most aftermarket coolers will fit just fine in that case.

I simply couldn't find one. A case fan even with 4 pin wouldn't work because of how they attach.

The clips should attach to any standard case fan so I have no idea what you're talking about (as usual).

The fan screws directly into the heatsink, so I don't see how a case fan would work, I'll take pics when I get chance, it's hard to explain.

Actually mayby it wouldn't be a problem, I'd just would have to find the right screws that were long enough and wide enough at the top... or used a washer.

like most heatsink fans? You just measure the fan on the heatsink, and plop a case fan on there. Works 100%.
