DirectX 12 looks more promising as its compatible with both Nvidia/AMD graphics cards

Both D3D12 and Mantle are not worth any hype when it comes to Dolphin.

Are there any areas of the emulation where OpenGL and D3D11 are currently lacking for Dolphin?

Yeah, both OpenGL and D3D lacks blending shaders. But this isn't possible with current GPUs without a huge performance drop :/
