controls on steam deck

Hi. Probably a stupid question. But I installed dolphin on my steam deck and fired up my first GameCube game. It started but problem was I couldn't play it. Couldn't get any of the buttons to register as a start button to start the game. Tried several of the options in the controller settings (I think there were 4). None of them worked. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Here are a couple. I'm not sure why the B button doesn't have anything. It wasn't like that yesterday. Also, when I click on the buttons it turns up three periods but I can't seem to change anything??

Now that I'm looking at it it really looks like it's set up for a keyboard not a controller even though it says the configuration is a controller.
