Controller support Gamecube

My friend and I are trying to Netplay ssbm and the controller ports are confusing the crap out of us. We both have the first two ports as standard controller (trust me I made sure). Here are some pictures to show what we are doing wrong. It either is black screen or it starts and I am the only one that can control my controller.

This is a really dumb question I know, and I have already tried googling it and I tried every possible combination of ports/pads/slots..etc...
