Controller Problems

So, today I downloaded Dolphin and attempted to play a game on it. Unfortunately, I seem to be having some trouble getting my controller to work with the emulator. It isn't a Wii controller, but is rather a generic plug-and-play controller that I use to play games on my computer in general. When I first booted up the game, I got a message telling me to "Connect the Nunchuck or Classic Controller to the Wii Remote." Undeterred, I poked around Google for a bit and found some incredibly old threads which advised me to switch over from "Emulated Wiimote" to "Hybrid Wiimote." I did this. Unfortunately, this gave me a new error, which states, "Communications with the Wii Remove have been interrupted." Once again, I turned to Google, and once again I found incredibly old advise telling me to disable "Speaker Data." Unfortunately, this time I was somewhat more hard-pressed, as "Enable Speaker Data" box was already unchecked. All the rest of the advise seems to revolve around getting a brand name Wii remote instead of an off-brand Wii remote, as I was advised that off-brand Wiimotes wouldn't work, but I wasn't using a Wiimote at all, so this advise didn't seem to apply. I eventually tried resetting everything and going back to the original keyboard settings to see if that would help, but that didn't make the error messages go away, either.

So! This brings me to the thread. What am I doing wrong, and what can I do to fix it? Do I need to buy myself a Wiimote to get the emulator to work? Or would buying a Wiimote just leave me in the same situation I am now: wondering what to do to fix this error?

Set an emulated Wiimote and set the attachment to Nunchuck or Classic controller and do not forget to assign buttons to the wiimote AND the attachment....
Check my profile for up to date specs.

Set it back to Emulated Wiimote, then open the configuration window for that emulated Wiimote, and set the Extension (should be in the second-right column) to Nunchuk or Classic.

Hybrid Wiimote is not what you want in your situation, and it's also very broken.

Thank you so much, mstreurman and JosJuice! That fixed it; I think my problem was that I had Extension set to none. Now that I have it set to something else, the error messages are no longer popping up! You both are wonderful.

Unfortunately, now I'm facing two other problems. First, when I enter the buttons, they don't register properly. For example, if I set the IR buttons to the keyboard (maybe W, A, S, and D), they work fine. But if I input them to my controller? Nothing happens (or should I say, they will register as being input, but when I press the buttons to make anything happen in the game, nothing happens).

Second, while I was typing this, not doing anything with the game at all, the game decided to pop up a "Communications with the Wii Remove have been interrupted," error for no reason that I can discern.

Please post a screenshot of how you've set it up when it doesn't work with the controller, and tell us what situation in what game you're using to test.

Games automatically disconnect Wii Remotes after 5 minutes to save battery (though this of course doesn't save any battery when you're not using a real Wii Remote). Press any button on the Wii Remote to reconnect.

Okay, the screenshot is here: https://preview.ibb.co/iTC3Wv/Keys.png

That is one of the many different setups that I've tried for the game. For example, I can switch the IR and D-pad buttons, and the functionality (or lack thereof) also switches: I'm able to access my toolbar but not walk, no matter which setup it is in, but I know the IR is where the walking is supposed to be, as if I put the IR onto my keyboard (W, A, S, and D), then I can get the character to walk. It's so odd.

I'm trying to play Harvest Moon: Animal Parade. Basically what I seem to be having trouble with at this point is walking (I can't do it) and anything else that would be done with the walking button. Other things seem to operate fine (I can talk to people, select tools and other items, etc), but moving doesn't work. It's strange because I can get walking to work to some extent on the keyboard (if I select some keys but not others), and it's clear that my controller is working (because it all the buttons will operate with other functions) but just walking defeats my poor character, heh.

Thank you so much for all the help!

I haven't played this game, but it sounds unlikely that the IR pointing would be used for walking. Click the Configure button below the extension dropdown to get the configuration window for the Nunchuk, and check if the control stick on that isn't what controls the walking.

Ahh, that totally made it work! I'm so excited. Thank you so much for walking me through what probably should have been very easy, and yet for me was not. I wouldn't have been able to figure out how to make the whole thing work without your help. I really appreciate your efforts.  Heart

Maybe you also want to download the latest dev version from the download page (scroll down a bit) so you have the best accuracy.
