Okay..so my first attempt at a longwinded intellectual post. *gulps
So I wanted to have a discussion on a conflict that has been going around various forums, that I, a casual youtuber, have experienced first hands. The issue at hand is "Video sharing and in some cases screenshot sharing, and how different forums choose to look at it". The reason why I bring this topic up here is because the dolphin forums have been very lenient on me in terms of allowing me to share video's openly as a youtuber, and not have my posts deleted or me being banned as a consequence, which I am very great for, as well as the fact that we have some pretty intellectual staff/devs running the site, and because of this, I respect the opinion of the higher up's here and any input they may have for the conversation.
Anyway, what convinced me to make this post was actually a post made recently in the r/emulation sub https://www.reddit.com/r/emulation/comme..._emulator/
Before I continue, I just want to say I have no issue with the policy change. It is fair, reasonable, understandable, and frankly, im so greatful they are allowing video sharing period. The outbreak of cemu videos is a problem for a relatively small subreddit, which can and does hamper the overall discussion of the subreddit when the top upvoted posts are just videos, so the mods of the emulation subreddit are being pretty fair here, but it does remind me that different forums handle this situation differently, and most of the time it isn't always a black or white rule. What I want to do is go over some situations that i've been through as a youtuber with different forums policies on sharing youtube content and hopefully give understanding and a solution in the end.
-My Anime List-
When I first started thinking of doing youtube as a hobby, I wanted to talk about anime. Back then, I didn't use adsense, so the purpose wasn't for money. I love anime and I love talking about it, and getting a little personal, im a lonely guy in an area deprived of gamers and otaku's, so I also wanted to have a steady group of people to talk to and share my opinions with. I started posting videos, and over time I noticed I wasn't getting any views or comments, so I came up with the idea of finding an anime community to post in, to try and get the ball rolling. The site I ultimately settled on was my anime list. It's a pretty well known website in the anime community and they seemed to strive for a mature, intellectual discussions, so I thought it would be perfect, and I was half right. Going in I was nervous that there would be some policy against video sharing, so I made a thread asking the community for permission and everything went great. I had atleast 30 posts and all were very kind and gave me a thumbs up as a long as I made my posts out in a way that people who didn't want to watch, could also join in the conversation, so I did and for a day, everything was fine. People comment on my posts, I commented back, and we discussed! The next day however I see that my post was removed and I now have a message from a moderator that my post was removed because "It is considered advertising and users aren't allowed to post links that link away from the forums". Im not going to lie, I was upset and didn't know how to proceed. The realization sunk in that I may be stuck just making videos for not, so ultimately I gave up and stopped making videos for a while, and left the forum out of frustration (You could also call it a rage quit).
-GBATEMP-
After a few months of cooling down, I got back into youtube and this time, doing videos on emulation. I was inspired by Tino, and many others on the dolphin forums to start making post processing shaders and videos of them in a action and surprisingly the response was good. During this time, I was getting views and comments just for tweaking some sliders, and wanting to push myself further, I even learned basic texture editing. After Twilight Princess HD was announced for wiiU, many fans were left disappointed (including myself) at the minimal graphical enhancements of the game, so I decided to make a post on a very big emulation site called GBAtemp. (im sure all of you have heard of it). In the post, I was using my videos to show my perspective on how minimal the enhancements were by saying that we emulationists have had better quality for years by showing off some texture packs made by various talented artists in the community and I even made some textures of my own in order to push my point home. I will be fair and admit that I went a little over bored. I had 2 or 3 videos in my thread, a bunch of screenshots, and the conversation derailed to me as a youtuber and of coarse I fell for it and let it get derailed and ultimately the thread was taken down by a moderator. Feeling like it was like my anime list all over again, I made a ragequit thread calling out the mod. I didn't say anything to mean or bad, just "I don't agree and I quit". The mod replied back to me, and we talked civil for a moment, but as soon as I questioned him, and compared my own background as a moderator of the Dragon Nest forums years back, he flipped on me, told me "Your only doing this for money, we don't like youtubers spamming videos, stop advertising". (Note im tl'dring it)
In his defense, like I said, I did have three videos in my thread. I admit now even if I was using the videos to prove a point, I should have been a bit more understanding, but in my defense it was my thread, people were choosing to watch and reply, and although it did derail for a moment, It was mostly a good debate/conversation going on in it. (Another Rage quit)
What I took away from these instances was that every forums looks at content sharing differently. Some don't want it period, some are cool with it to an extent, and very rarely you get sites with a (Fuck Yeah!) mentality about it. Reddit being the one site I know with the fuck yeah mentality. ^.^ What I also learned is that the "Youtuber/Money/advertisement narrative comes up more than it should. I will gladly admit that I have adsense enabled, so I do make adrevenue now, but here is the deal. Hear is why I get angry when I get told that "Im only sharing for the $$$$"
![[Image: a256f4acb2.png]](http://puu.sh/pFzrV/a256f4acb2.png)
From May of last year to june 2016, this is what I have made from ad revenue and being completely fair, most of this is from one single video (A rare right time and right place 20%-viral situation) and for those who don't know, This money won't truely be mine until I reach 100$ because of the threshold limit. Since then, I have slowed down video production drastically and so I probably won't see this 100$ for another half a year, and in the meantime I work for a living and in 6 months will probably make around $6000 as a rough estimate. This 100$ means shit to me and for many starter youtubers, they feel exactly the same. It's really not all about money. Some of us would rather have things like notoriety, peers, discussion, an ecosystem, life, to simply be heard in a sea of constant debate. I know that officially there are vauge policies in place on every site, but thats part of the issue most of the times. Most of the time the rule is only enforced in situations where the poster admits to being a youtuber, if it just "Me posting a pewdiepie or markaplier video" , no one bats an eye. In the situation where I (Omnianimakun) post my video, then I am then advertising. Even if im only doing the occasional video and im genially posting because I think what I made is cool (We'll say once every 2 weeks). To me it comes off as a doubled standard.
BUT. I have grown over this learning experiance. Im not going to rage quit anymore good websites. Even if the Dolphin Team said "Stop posting videos". I would gladly stop and limit myself to my 4k screenshots that a certain user on here hates loading.
I''ve come to the decision that every website has the right to do as it does. I may feel like my videos are an extension of myself, but others may find it bothersom, and I understand that now which has lead me to my proposed solution.
A new website made by me!
I have nothing concrete at the moment, but I have a brother who works for a small time tech company, who would probably help me construct it. The point of the website would be to give a place for my fellow emulationists, gamers, and otaku to post their Videos without worrying at all (To the extent of porn, real life violence, and all that jazz). It would still be a forum with text based discussions, but the difference would be that the rule on content sharing would be 100% white. No vauge take downs. It would be a website where people can share their opinion in any format. A place where the small youtubers in our niche community can find their footing. Of coarse it would be non-profit too. I want to avoid using ads so maybe a donation system for hosting fee's, using excess donations for community giveaways. I have a million ideas!
Anyway, i've been writing this post for about 2 hours now, so im going to end it here.
I was going to add more detail here and there, but I got off of work before writing this post and now im to tired to continue. Q.Q
If you've read my wall of text, I appreciate any input you may have and note im not writing this to offend anyone, just to kind of put my thoughts into the air and offer a perspective not many people see.
I do want to reiterate that I agree with R/emulation's policy change. I love the community there. I know one or two of you are also fellow members and will probably agree it's an awesome place!
I will gladly advertise this subreddit. ^.^
