Computer was running all games perfectly; suddenly dropped to 40 w audio distortion

Computer was running everything flawlessly. Mario Kart Wii was running at or around 60 FPS. Now everything is laggy, even GCN games. Sometimes during the gameplay it spikes up to 60, stays for a few seconds then drops back down to 40 or lower with severe audio distortion. Help?
