In terms of style, yes. In terms of age, no.

Shonumi Wrote:When the PS1 and N64 came around, I remember renting less (chiefly because we bought more games). I did rent N64 games on occasion, but really that's what friends were for; just bum off of their collection is what I say. I remember my good friend once lent me his SNES just so I could play Super Metroid (awesome buddy he was). I also practically borrowed TimeSplitters 2 from him until I got my own copy. I managed to grab MK64 from him for a while as well, and beat every course for him (something he'd never done). Borrowed Tales of Symphonia from a classmate (different friend) in my senior year of High School before I got my own copy.

With all of this talk about next-gen systems, I don't really care about used games. I've had a lot more fun just swapping games with friends; hopefully that's something that can continue in one form or another in the future. When the GBA came out, me and all my friends would just bring out all of our cartridges, (GB, GBC, GBA, whatever) take our Gameboys out by the side of the house, and we'd just play whatever any of us had, sort of like a shared gaming library. Summers were a blast back then, to say the least.

Yeah I borrowed a lot from friends back then too. I remember a friend let me have majora's mask and thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. My parents of course thought it was too violent.

I have something like half a dozen SNES games and half a dozen N64 games in my collection. And around 2-3 dozen GC/Wii games and 2-3 dozen retail PC games. And now I have close to 200 games on steam. Mathematically if this curve continues I think I'll be up to 200 million by the end of my lifespan Tongue. In all seriousness steam has made it ridiculously easy to buy dozens of games at a time for the price that you would normally pay for a couple of games. I never buy anything that isn't on sale for less than $10. And everyone I know on steam is just like me in that regard. So sometimes I wonder how publishers make a significant income off of steam. I guess the reduced overhead (30% instead of >74%) combined with that fact that people spend more when the products are cheaper.

Coincedently, my folks thought it was too demonic (turning dying souls into masks, getting possessed by their spirits). I was actually "banned" from playing MM, until they forgot about the ban. Majora as a boss was creepy though, I'll give them that. Fwiw, MM is actually a very dark Zelda game. I don't read many so called "Zelda theories" often, but some of the ones relating to MM are downright disturbing.

I think part of the reason that my game collection has grown exponentially is also the fact that I have so much disposable income now that I don't have to depend on my parents anymore. *Flaunts wealth* Even at around $4 average per game on steam I've spent close to $800 over about 2 years. And yet I've only played maybe a dozen of those close to 200 games. I find it difficult to play games anymore. I just can't get immersed into them like I used to be able to. I think it's just the fact that I've played so many video games over the years that I've "seen it all". Anything a video game throws at me I feel like I've already done before. Also I generally dislike the style of gameplay used in modern games ("streamlined" and "cinematic"). And I can't help but notice all of the little flaws and try to fix them. But I love discussing them and collecting them. This is why I think emulation and digital distribution are so important. Being able to easily get your hands on old PC games (which has a smaller market compared to old console games due to a number of issues including security features) and emulate old console hardware that would normally be difficult to buy is important for the preservation of these games as well allowing people like me to begin building retro collections.

I....I agree with this.

Shonumi Wrote:You have no idea how much of a grammar nazi I could become. I can spot errors you never even knew existed (like that incomplete comparison from your quote).

Please do. Even for just a week. It would be simultaneously hilarious and annoying.

I think pretty much everyone except IlovetheGamecube (because he's so young) considers either gen 1-4 or gen 1-5 to be "retro". I think we've finally reached the point where gen 5 can be considered retro personally.

@Shonumi I have a GameCube, DS Lite, Wii, and Gameboy Advance SP. I bought the SP last year (long story) and I got a bunch of NES remakes like Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3. I play emulators on school computers through a flash drive (Jnes, ZSNES) with games I uploaded with my moms laptop. I think it's cool to play games that are nothing like today's games, but leave you feeling just as entertained if not more. When I get my laptop I will play as many games that I can find on eBay. I personally think classic/retro games are better. So yes, I play games from before I was born.

A 32-bit yes but that couldn't handle 3D though. Graphics looked like 16-bit ones. It was more like an enhanced SNES
