It depends on the game. Almost every Virtual Console game will work with the GameCube and Classic controller, through the WiiMote or WiiMote + Nunchuk usually don't work for SNES VC and N64 VC games due the complexity of additional buttons being required.
GameCube games definitely won't work with any other control scheme than the GameCube controller. As for actual Wii games... Most Wii games support either WiiMote or WiiMote + Nunchuk, sometimes both. There are a couple of games that support the Classic and GameCube controller, noticeable games include Xenoblade Chronicles (Classic or WiiMote + Nunchuk), The Last Story (Classic or Wiimote + Nunchuk), Mario Kart Wii (every controller type) and Super Smash Bros. Brawl (every controller type). Of course there are more games than can offer support for the Classic or GameCube controller. The Classic controller supports no rumble through while the GameCube controller does. As far as I am aware, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is WiiMote + Nuncuk only. The Metroid Prime Trilogy has the same control scheme since it is ported for the Wii. The GameCube releases of Metroid Prime 1 & 2 uses the GameCube controller (since it were originally GameCube releases). The same applies to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess too where the GameCube release is GameCube controller only and the Wii release is WiiMote + Nunchuk only (until the HD release for the Wii U that is which has GamePad or Classic/Pro Controller support only). So yeah, you could prefer a GameCube release. The problem only is that Nintendo released almost every of their own games in 4:3 format exclusive until the era of the Wii. But sometimes you can be creative. Such as with Donkey Kong Country Returns or New Super Mario Bros. Wii. These games are WiiMote or WiiMote + Nunchuk only but do not require the pointer or the WiiMote. The WiiMote is used instead for shaking around or tilting with it. You can bind these actions for shaking and tilting to your controller or choice as well through Dolphin. For example Donkey Kong Country Returns uses the shaking of both the WiiMote and Nunchuk in order for Donkey Kong to stomp. Just bind the shake commands for both devices to a button such as X. You can bind the rest of the controls as you seem fit too and it will as if it you playing the game was made for regular controls. By the way, the Super Mario Galaxy games are a perfect fit for the Mouse + Keyboard combination, never felt more natural and precise. Mario will only lack analog movement (such as running slowly), but that was never an issue during all my replays with Dolphin. The perfectly precise star bit pointer made more than up for it. |
