This is just my personal opinion, but even a half-wise decent USB controller won't cost you more than $15 at the least. I use mine strictly for emulation and a few PC games where it makes sense (racing games). I can honestly say, I can't believe I've been emulating games this long without a controller; to me it absolutely makes a difference.

Having said that, you have to edit your GCPad to use the mouse for the main stick. I'm assuming you have your keyboard setup to use something like the Arrow keys for this. When you click on the button to edit your controller and it waits for your input, move your mouse up, down, left, and right for the corresponding directions; it's pretty easy. It should read values like "Cursor Y-/Cursor Y+" for up and down, "Cursor X-/Cursor X+" for left and right. I'll post a screenshot of what it should look like later.

EDIT: You may have to right click the direction of the main stick you want to edit, manually type in the words (e.g. "Cursor Y-") and hit the Set button for it to work, depending on your setup, at least that's what I had to do. Might be different OS X users. At any rate, make sure the Main Stick section looks like what I have pictured below:
