Hello! I've been using Dolphin not too long ago. I've been trying to play Cave Story on the emulator, but it's so extremely slow that it doesn't even boot! The farthest I've been able to go is the intro screen. The speed averages 20%, sometimes just 8%. I'm using Dolphin for Ubuntu, using the recommendations for speeding up I found here. I find it very strange that a simple 2D game has such a slow speed in an emulator.

Computer specs, if I recall correctly:
* Laptop, HP zx5000
* 1 GB RAM
* Pentium 4 Mobile, 2.4 GHz
* ATI Radeon 9600 as the graphics card
* Using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx because I'm an open-source advocate mainly

Pentium 4 desktop is lowest-end pc that can support dolphin but pentium 4 laptop...even worse ,same to your video card was really old.Dolphin is a emulator so it need a powerful PC .Even if you run all PC game fullspeed ,doesn't mean the same to dolphin(maybe you're fine with halfspeed)
Solution : get 750$ and buy a core i5 laptop or build your own desktop under 500$

Solution is unsatisfactory. I spent all of my savings and even more buying that laptop. Still, having to buy a new PC just to play Cave Story? Come on, it's a plain 2D game, it weighs less than 30 MB, and I could play the original PC version in a computer far less powered than the one I have right now. Couldn't you just make the emulator more efficient? Or recommend me another emulator in the meanwhile?

Strange - on the list, Cave Story appears as needing barely a Pentium Dual T3400 @ 2.16GHz; as I supposed it needs little CPU power to be played. So, what am I doing wrong in here?

Nope,it's pentium dual core 2*times faster than yours<it's has 2 core 2 thread,yours has only 1 core 2 thread>beat pentium4 3.6Ghz a mile

I do remember my computer has two cores. Maybe I just looked at the sticker it had on the cover! I have my laptop at home right now, I'll check it when I come back and post the full true specs later. In the meanwhile, which setup do you recommend me for this game?

No,it's hyper threading make a virtual thread so you are 2 thread not 2 core,disable it maybe faster on dolphin but slower on multitask.If you don't believe me then download "CPUZ" and check it yourself
Set up: Look here
Or this video tutorial
