I was just wondering,  between custom roms,  and the similarity of the GPU drivers between both K1 devices,  has anyone been able to patch working Desktop OpenGL into a nexus 9,  either in a standalone driver stack or a custom rom?  Has Google actually succeeded in fully locking it down?  I remember with the Nexus 4/5/7 the stock drivers had no OpenCL,  but qualcomm actually provided dev drivers with OpenCL included,  and as a result a workaround was found (albeit a rather pointless one,  it was a bit too late by that point).

It's only a guess but if the libraries are still there, it could be potentially hacked. If there are no GL libraries you would need a gpu driver with libraries and no limitations. If new tegra note or shield will have the same SoC and gpu as Nexus 9 it could be potentially ported to Nexus 9

There are no other 64-bit K1 devices to take drivers/libraries from.
