can't see IR pointer

Hi, I'm using the dolphin 2.0 release with a gamepad (emulated wiimote) and I can't see the IR pointer. From what I understand the emulator is supposed to recognize the mouse and use it as the pointer. I've tried playing with the sliders under "IR Pointer" (default pad plugin) options but that doesn't seem to do anything, every game continues to say "point wii remote at the screen."
