Can't detect simulated keypresses

I am trying to use a midi controller to play drums with Rock Band games. I am using translator software (BOME MIDI Translator Classic) to convert the incoming midi messages into simulated keystrokes. This translation works fine in other applications, I can use the midi controller to input characters in a text editor, but when I try to configure the key bindings in Dolphin it doesn't recognize the simulated keystrokes coming from the translator.

The only information I can find on this issue is in this post, but it's two years old and doesn't provide a real solution:

Are there settings I can change in Dolphin to get it to recognize the input from this virtual keyboard? Or is there an alternative method of using a midi controller as an input device in Dolphin?

I'm interested in this as well, in my case because I want to try programming a co-op buddy bot for PSO. In my case I'm using Linux and have tried xdotool, which normally works for such things, but which doesn't work in Dolphin.

Anyone have any pointers on how to send input to Dolphin other than with physical human input devices? I'm after GCN controls, specifically. I'd accept something which requires some programming, though it would be nicest if it didn't require recompiling Dolphin.

If you are using a Unix-based system and don't mind programming (but recompiling Dolphin won't be necessary), you can use this: https://github.com/dolphin-emu/dolphin/blob/master/Source/Core/InputCommon/ControllerInterface/Pipes/Pipes.h#L15-L23

Aside from the instructions that the link leads to, I think you also have to map the "pipe buttons" to the buttons of the emulated controller, as if you were using a physical gamepad, before it will work.
