Can I play Wii games with an Xbox controller emulating a GCN?

Title says it all. Can I play Wii games with an Xbox controller emulating a GCN controller?

I remember this being the case when I had a Wii - some games, you could play without a Wii remote. Just a GCN controller would do. How can I get this kind of setup to work with Dolphin? Every time I start up an ISO with no Wii remote or emulated Wii remote enabled, I can't do anything.

I ask because some Wii games do work very well with Dolphin and some of them are preferred to be played with an emulated GCN controller rather than a Wii remote.

Some games allow you to use the GCN controller (MKWii, SSBB...) while others don´t. And yes, what you ask should be possible.
