Question
I know that sound stupid but Windows 8 about to release on July1.2011(rumor 2,3 month ago) or 2012
I want to know what's kind of CPU can support 128 bits,mine only 64 bits support(pentium D),gfx card 9800GT 256 Bits
Can dolphin improve speed with 128 bits ?
Please,nice peopleBig Grin

Current, newest intel SSE instructions are already carried out at 128-bit level. That doesn't mean any of them is a 128-bit processor.

You must understand that the rise in bit arcitechture, integers, data bus, etc.. Is exponential. Consider that 32-bit OS can only utilize 3.5gb of physical RAM. 64-bit OS can utilize 16.3 million terabytes of RAM. There do not exist any commercial 128-bit processors yet and will not for a long time.

Some powerful servers and PowerPC cpu's that utilize TIMI instruction set, do already address all memory by default at 128 bits. If no CPU can yet support pointers that large, they are automatically translated to 64-bits, until the machine is upgraded with hardware that can handle it.

The question is irrelevant (what CPU can support 128-bit processor), because you will not be able to upgrade to such a processor with any current computers. You will need entirely new motherboard with chipset, RAM and bios that will support it.

Also, that new CPU would have to support current instruction sets with backward compatibility (SSe3, 4, 4.1, 4.2). If it were to utilize a new instruction set, dolphin cannot work on it.

The 128 bit support was just a myth or rumor, Microsoft already stated that no such support would exist on Windows 8. The market hasn't even adjusted to 64-bit yet, while 64-bit is becoming more mainstream it is still not widely supported as some hardware vendors won't provide 64-bit drivers. Also quite a bit of OEM PC's still ship with 32-bit operating systems, legacy 32-bit drivers aren't compatible with 64-bit.

I don't see 128-bit support happening anytime soon, even when it does it won't be adopted right away like with 64-bit support.

Thanks for the fast reply ,ocean .I don't wish it run on my specs, may be i get to buy a new one that can support 128 bits in next future ofcourse
Edit: I've already knew Mcsoft not confirm yet,I asked because my friends keep telling me that's true

128 bits? Do you have any idea of how much time will that take?
And... new Windows OS?

No thanks, I like Dolphin and my old OS as stable as they are now.

Making a CPU 128-bit doesn't really mean it'll be faster, I think 64-bit is just more optimized than 32-bit. Really all you need is the vector processing registers for heavy duty math. What I want to see in future is making more of the CPU vector units, maybe dedicate a core to only vector processing instead of scalar operations.

My professor from computer architeture says that for now a 128 bits processor from a PC don't are a good think!
The only improvement is to get a integer from 128 bit rather 64...
This will take a lot of processes and spend a lot of memory...
If for now 64 bit is like a necessity (for lack of memory qwuantities that a 32 bits processor can see), the 128 bits is not good for now...
