Isn't the purpose of having multiple LEDs in each bank to simulate one larger IR source on each side? If not then is it just a viewing angle issue, or do the WiiMotes see each LED separately and use this to calculate something? I'm actually intrigued if the size of the individual LEDs is relevant as long as the total brightness is correct.
