Quote:it appears Bulldozer sits somewhere between a Sandy Bridge Core i7 2600K and Gulftown Core i7 990X

4.2GHz on 4 cores seems very interesting, but one thing i've learnt on this forum is that the architecture sometimes matters more than the clock speed. besides, doesn't AMD normally make less powerful but more cost effective processors?

My Sandy Bridge kicks that AMD butt...err I mean Bulldozer any day.
And so will the Ivy Bridge.
AMD will just have to accept to be 2nd, and we all know there's no points for second best....right.

Ahem,

NOTE- The leaked cpu is an ES sample, this does not mean that this is the final performance of the Bulldozer platform.

If you look closely at Bulldozer, it's more or less 4-6 physical cores if you compare it to other x86/64 cpus, but has 8 spus.

Also, the 2600k is multhreaded, so 8 threads together, and the 990x has 12 threads.

The big advantage to Bulldozer that has been for AMD for several months around time of Phenom II release, Bulldozer is expected to be at the most around $250-$300 for the high end chip, where as the 990x is still $999 retail, and the 2600k is what, $350 or so?

It depends on how efficient the cpu is. Pentium 4 had clocked speeds up to 3.8 ghz stock, and could be overclocked 5ghz+, but then even compared to the Athlon 64's that were clocked around 2.4-2.6 ghz max stock the Athlons killed Pentium 4, even with the first generation hyperthread.

Great work AMD, I wonder what would be the benefits from the merge with ATI. This battle is just about to begin.

The A series APU is one advantage.
