I was looking around for info on the wii sensor bar and I found a web page that claims you can make one out of a mouse:

Has anyone here tried something like this? Would just the two ir leds be enough for the wiimote to get an accurate reading, or would you need more than that?

Nintendo Sensor bar has 10 IR LED
2 IR LED will work but the accuracy is nowhere as good as the original one

Actually, the nintendo bar uses 10 LEDs because their viewing angle is awful. The second revision uses 6, and works just as well, as they have a wider viewing angle. If his IR LEDs have a wide enough viewing angle, then they'll do no worse than a nintendo 10 LED bar.

There are now adjustable view on some bars. The mouse trick may work, but its worth the 10-20 for a bar IMO.

After opening up an old mouse and looking at the board, I'm thinking it'll be easier to just go to radio shack and pick up some new leds instead of trying to get the ones off the board. Main reason I'm thinking of making one instead of buying one is so that I can put the leds in as small a package as possible and stick em under the bottom corners of my monitor. And with a usb cable for power, i can plug it into my monitor's built-in hub
