Build Your Own Dolphin Game Console!!

Hey Everybody! I think this is my first post. but anyways...

Iv'e been thinking about building a computer with its main purpose being a Emulation console. I attached a screenshot showing the parts involved and the cost. The CPU can easily be over-clocked to 3.5 GHz.

You'll notice that it doesn't include a dvd drive or a case. I was going to purchase a "compatible" dvd drive off ebay for around 20 dollars. and I'm planning on building my own case.

What materials do you think would best suit this? I'm thinking maybe plexiglass something along those lines. The chassis would be slim and lightweight.

It would run a 64-bit Linux distro. I'm thinking either Ubuntu or debian and configuring it to use a low resource window manager like Openbox and make it use a netbook like user interface that can be controlled with a game controller.

If Dolphin just reads a owned game disk and doesn't copy it, is that legal??

I'm thinking about trying to make a distro based off of ubuntu or debian (yes I know they are similar) with a netbook interface, with more than a dozen emulators preinstalled and configured for low system resources but higher priority User tasks ( like the emulators when executed).

Tell me what you think.

Core i3 530 2.93ghz easily overclockable
get a good motherboard for it and you'll be kicking ass basically.
2nd, linux and dolphin together=slllooowww
you should get windows 7 x64 for emulators

I'm running super smash bos brawl right now while typing this. I'm using debian squeeze and Im only using 700 MB of RAM while streaming music, running Dolphin AND typing this. I'm getting over 30 fps on average, while doing all of that. I also have anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering maxed out. I'm using a E8400 and 8800GT. A E5400 OC'ed to 3.5 GHz is almost comparable to my current CPU.

Dolphin (open source) + Linux (open source) = Awesome

Windows is proprietary crap. Open source Apps and operating systems go hand in hand.

with the pc you already have you can get like 60fps with dolphin.and no dolphin+linux makes shit due to developers working mostly on the windows versions since they're more popular. dolphin on linux is a secondary choice if you don't have money to get windows. lol the new pc you're buying is gonna be lamer then the one you already have. in fact, that e8400 can easily OC up to 4ghz and blow off any dolphin game

i'm not advertising, it's just that it's the OS of emulators, as everything is 10-40fps faster on windows 7 as far as emulation goes...and i'm not continuing this, i already gave you what i've learned, and since you seem to be new with dolphin, you don't know as much as i do about it.

Sorry I didn't mean to be rude. I actually started messing around with dolphin about 8 months ago on Windows. For the past 6 months Ive actually completely ditched Windows. I used to dual boot with Windows 7. I do realize alot of the developers have been working on the Windows version but since the project is open source its easier to port it to to other platforms than if it was closed source.

Linux is the Best OS for emulation since most gaming done on Linux is through some type of emulation or compatibility layer (like WINE)

i saw your attachment, and you're getting 30fps/fullspeed, but i said if u used windows you would get 60fps/double speed. 8 months ago dolphin was different. try dual booting with W7 and you'll see what i mean. i also recommend you don't spend money on a new pc, but a very very nice motherboard about 150-200$ and a great cpu cooler. that way you can overclock that E8400 to 4ghz

The pc wasn't for me. I would try and sell it with my own custom slim case. You know a console style case. I think I will include a free game with it. I saw on ebay super smash bros brawl goes for about $28.

People would pay for something like that. It would be both a console and computer. I'm surprised people haven't started doing it already.

I was thinking about selling my computer too. Its too much for me. I need to spend my time doing more productive things.

The hardest part would be making the case.

if you're doing it for someone else, then i hardly suggest you put a dual boot, because the pc you're building is weaker thus it will get less fps then you get in linux, so it might be a problem. windows 7 x64 and debian linux would be fine.

SSBB runs well, you may not handle all the slower games (like Super mario Galaxy). Btw don't worry it's legal to copy your own games to your hard drive
