Bluetooth Passthrough & Wii Remote Plus - Synced Once But Won't Sync Again

Question
Hi all,

I managed to get my Wii Remote Plus connected via Bluetooth Passthrough and played some of games with it (e.g. Swordplay in Wii Sports Resort). All I did to Sync it was select Passthrough a Bluetooth adapter, start a game, press a button on the Wiimote and press the Sync button in Controller Settings.

I came back a while later to play some more, but I cannot get Dolphin to Sync with the Wii Remote Plus again. I still get the "Scanning for Wii Remotes" message, but the 4 LEDs on the Wiimote just keep flashing for 20 seconds and then stop.

Here's the process I'm following:

  1. Use the Zadig app to install libusbK (v3.0.7.0) (I have also tried WinUSB (v6.1.7600.16385)).
  2. In Dolphin, select Passthrough a Bluetooth adapter in Controller Settings.
  3. Start a game.
  4. Press the red Sync button on the Wiimote (4 LEDs start to flash), then press Sync in Controller Settings. Also tried pressing the buttons the other way around.
  5. See the Scanning for Wii Remotes message in the game window.
  6. The 4 LEDs just keep flashing. Wiimote doesn't vibrate and switch to 1 LED as it did before. Eventually it stops flashing.

I have tried:
  • Pressing the Reset button in Controller Settings.
  • Holding down the red Sync button on the Wiimote for 10+ seconds.
  • Older versions of Dolphin or 5.0-10960 in a different folder (each time using the portable.txt trick so a local user directory is used).
  • Pairing using normal Windows drivers via both Settings and Control Panel - it looks like the Wiimote is recognised as Input or Game Controller, but I cannot get it to pair.
  • Tested the Wiimote with my Wii - it syncs/pairs fine.
  • Experimenting with different games and settings in Dolphin (different graphics backends, VSync & Fullscreen on/off, Continuous Scanning & Background input on/off...)

Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7 7500U 2.7 GHz
RAM: 16 GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 1080
OS: Windows 10 Professional x64 1903

BT: Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4 Bluetooth 4.1 (Rivet Networks Killer Wireless-AC 1535)
Wiimote: RVL-036 (Not sure what is shows as in Windows as I haven't been able to pair it)

Dolphin: 5.0-10960

As you can imagine this is really frustrating as it worked so easily the first time (and it worked so well in game). I just can't figure out what happened / changed to stop it working again.

I'd appreciate any help you can offer to get this working again. Let me know if you need any more information. Thanks!

Hi again,

So I left it for a while then tried it again and it worked! I still had the WinUSB (v6.1.7600.16385) driver installed. It seems to be okay now and will connect without issues when I need it to.

However, I discovered while troubleshooting / testing that you can extract the drivers from the Zadig app and install them via command line with devcon.exe.

Now I have a system setup using AutoHotkey so that when I launch any game that needs Bluetooth Passthrough, the WinUSB driver is automatically installed before it launches. For other games my normal bluetooth driver is installed the same way. All I have to do is press the red sync button on the Wiimote when the game starts.

The setup is a little involved, but if anyone wants more details, let me know.

Hi,

I have the same problem here:

> Emulate + Bluetooth = working, but not very precise

> Installed libusbK in first try / WinUSB in second, start the game, push pair on wiimote + sync in controller interface = it's paired & works, but after some seconds wiimote stuck with all lights blue & repairing is not possible anymore

Hardware is working, so Software (Dolphin - V5.0-13562 + Wii Sports Resort) seems to do the problem. Any solution?

What particular BT Adapter are you using? BT Passthrough is very picky and it seems like your particular adapter is getting stuck after some time...

Hmm, that BT Adapter is fairly new and seems to be using a Realtek RTL8761B SoC. It looks like that particular SoC doesn't play well with BT Passthrough (perfect compatibility is only guaranteed with a real Wii BT adapter)...

Are there any experienced differences between an original Wii BT adapter and the Orico 403?

Please provide the details. This looks interesting.

I haven't noticed any until now, but keep in mind I haven't tried connecting more than 2 Wiimotes simultaneously (I don't own more controllers to try). If you want to be 100% sure you won't have issues, then you should get a real Wii BT Module...
