Does it? As far as I know, it stays on as long as the Wii is on. Isn't that only the Wii U?

You sure?
Cause if i block the Sensorbar with my hands the cursor won't work etc.
And it's on top of my monitor, so it's basically too close so the accuracy sucks sadly xd

Then maybe the problem is that it is too close.

probably, but well as said, skyward doesn't really use the sensorbar.
Though i completed the game now, was hell itself, so frustrating, i actually did try to be far away etc, but well the motion was crappy no matter what.
Sometimes it worked fine a bit, then it would be out of sync or something etc, was just a pure pain XD

But well, when i get Dolphinbar and play some other Wii games i will see if there is any difference, as well as try the passthrough with it, as it should probably work better than the cheap random one i got now.

Like I said, it uses the sensor bar to calibrate.

Well in that case i probably explains why the Wiimote was a total pain to use.
I can't really tell how i am supposed to point the sensor bar, as i sit and usually point the wiimote kinda upp, one would think the sensorbar needs to point towards the wiimote (as it's the "Center" position for me).
But it's very weak then, but if mess around and point the sensorbar just forward it kinda works better, which is weird as it looks like the wiimote isn't even within the range of it :S

Press the home menu button. That menu uses the IR bar. Use this to get an appropriate distance away.
