I think Zelda II divides a certain group of Zelda fans, not all of them. The jump from top-down to side-scrolling is contentious, apparently. The level of difficulty is also a turn-off for some, probably popularized as a negative thanks to game critics (AVGN). I have not played it, so I have no opinion. At the very least, it gave us "I AM ERROR", so it can't be bad at all.
I count them as Zelda games. It's karma, retribution if you will, for Nintendo snubbing Sony on the original SNES CD/Playstation project /s
I do think Sony felt a bit of schadenfreude when they saw Nintendo experimenting with CDs and all they got were 3 crappy Zelda "games" and a somewhat okay Mario puzzle game.
