A lot of good components would be shielded so it would be unlikely to get audible interference in a computer where all parts are expensive. My GPU, though, causes an audible crackle every frame sent, which only affects my microphone.

Which reminds me, it's possible the interference is only noticeably affecting a single line within the audio circuitry.

Guys he's running optical straight from the PC to his digital headphones. The amount of analog interference won't make any difference to him at all. That's why I asked why he needs the card.

yeah I know that, I was just saying about interference because it was mentioned.

It's completely possible he does not have optical out on his motherboard; only one of my motherboards has optical out and it's not as common on low-end boards, intel or amd.

Or, he just wasted money because he didn't know it was completely unnecessary.

Guys I have the Gigabyte Z97P-D3 motherboard, and it doesn't have an optical port on the back. That's why I need a sound card.
At the moment I'm running the headset straight from the USB port, and the sound quality isn't very good.

I ordered this sound card: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00NNQ9SQA/ref=sr_ph?ie=UTF8&qid=1442350761&sr=1&keywords=7.1+sound+card
But I had to return it, because the item doesn't match the picture at all, it had 3 sets of pins, when it should have 2 like in the picture (the small part and the large part).

I'm not sure what I should do with this headset, I may just return it, but I was planning on using it to record YouTube videos and stuff like that, because the sound quality of the mic is very good. So I thought why not get a 7.1 gaming headset, with a decent mic, all in one product.

In the instructions it says to connect it to your PC through the USB and the optical cable to get 7.1 sound, but my motherboard doesn't have the optical port at the back. Sad

BTW sorry for the late reply, been quite busy recently.

It looks good and everything, but it's a bit on the expensive side. Sad
I checked on the UK store, it's £56.

There is absolutely no point in using optical over usb. Both are lossless digital connections that force you to use the headsets built in DAC. I'm honestly not sure why you bought that headset instead of the other recommendations made in this thread. Which were imo much better.

Edit: Wait a second. According to the manual usb is only used to power the headset. You can't be running the audio over usb, it's impossible. The only two connection options are optical toslink (which goes through the decoder box) and trs (which goes directly to the headset). TRS would be the better option for a PC anyways since it bypasses the headset DAC so I'm not even sure why you're messing around with getting a sound card just for an optical connection.

Edit 2: Ok yeah you're definitely using trs by the looks of it. Which means that in order to get surround sound you need to have a sound card that supports virtual surround sound. Which imo is pointless for headphones. You could do surround sound over optical without VSS but again you would need a sound card since your motherboard doesn't have an optical port (how did you even manage to find a motherboard that does not have an optical audio out? They're virtually nonexistent these days). And since it would hurt audio quality you might as well stick to TRS.

Edit 3:
A good cheap option: http://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-Xonar-PCI-Audio-Card/dp/B003ZXDOL6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1442370596&sr=8-4&keywords=sound+card
Better option with EMI shield and beamforming mic (the mic isn't that great): http://www.amazon.co.uk/Blaster-Performance-Headphone-Beamforming-Microphone/dp/B009RPQA2G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1442370596&sr=8-2&keywords=sound+card
Better option without EMI shield or beamforming mic (the mic isn't that great): http://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-PCI-E-Sound-Blaster-Soundcard/dp/B009S1NTUU/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1442370596&sr=8-5&keywords=sound+card

Nah I'm using USB by itself at the moment, there still is sound, but it's not very good, it's just basic stereo sound, might even be mono actually.

I bought this headset because of the mic quality, I haven't seen any others which have mic quality as good as this one. This is a good thing because I'm planning on doing recording.

I tried TRS and it sounds like shit, there's a constant buzzing noise in the headset. I already know that optical is better because I tried optical on my PS3 (it has a port at the back), and the headset sounded pretty good.

That ASUS Xonar soundcard looks alright and everything, but the pin connection has 3 sections for some reason, my motherboard's PCI slots only have 2 sections of pins, 1 small and 1 long one.

Heres a picture of my motherboard:

I bought a sound card with that connection before, and it wouldn't fit in the slot.
