ThorhiantheUltimate Wrote:Yes, I have a desktop, but its likely it wont be coming with me out of state.
Why not?
I had no problem bringing my desktop to college.
ThorhiantheUltimate Wrote:I would also love to have enough money to buy a ultrabook and/or a laptop with a worthwhile GPU, but they aren't exactly cheap either, not really anything I could simply trade in my ipad for.
Well your ipad doesn't have a good gpu either. So if you're not bringing your desktop you either have to bite the bullet or give up on it.
You could trade in your ipad for a cheap laptop which would do what you use your ipad for better.
ThorhiantheUltimate Wrote:I want to be able to use SSD's when they get cheaper (heck, by the time I need this setup, that might be a viable option).
Isn't college right around the corner for you?
By the time people are using external SSDs USB 3.0 and thunderbolt will be long gone.
ThorhiantheUltimate Wrote:Also, USB 3.0 whether through bad controllers on the external device or bad drivers on flash memory don't usually even go beyond the 100Mb/s to 150Mb/s "barrier". 100Mb/s is around 12.5 MB/s. Ill have to look into which external HDD's have good controllers that will utilize most of the bandwidth that USB 3.0 offers.
That's because most flash drives aren't very fast. I haven't heard of this issue you're talking about on any major tech news site.
I have no issues maxing out my external HDD on usb 3.0 or usb 2.0
ThorhiantheUltimate Wrote:I won't be getting a MBA, but they beat the crap out of any Netbook ive encountered.
Netbooks but not ultrabooks. Ultrabooks are basically high end netbooks. They compete with the MBA, not conventional netbooks.
ThorhiantheUltimate Wrote:only a senior in highschool.
What do you mean only?!?
If you're a senior then college is right around the corner. You make it sound like it's some distant experience for old men.
ThorhiantheUltimate Wrote:Oh, BTW, my Ipad runs very well for browsing, and it handles pretty much all of the other forums I hang around except here, it doesn't like this forum's full post editor. My Ipad runs just fine for normal web browsing without flash (which unless you play games with it, is becoming less and less relevant on webpages, even with some ads). No lag at all, and pages load almost instantly when my connection has enough bandwidth to handle it
Same goes for a netbook/laptop/ultrabook. Except they work with this forum's post editor .
ThorhiantheUltimate Wrote:(hate being stuck with a 6Mb/s connection, and 1 Mb/s for upload).
Oh boo hoo. I'm running on 2 mb/s down and 0.256 mb/s up. I would kill for your speeds in my area.
It seems like your real issue with not buying a laptop is either "I don't have the money yet" or "I don't need it yet". And doesn't really have anything to do with needing thunderbolt or external graphics. For clarification my goal here is not necessarily to convince you to buy a laptop now but to understand why you consider these features so critical.
