Best 2019 gaming laptop for Dolphin.

Hey guys, just wanted to update you that I went ahead and got the ROG Zephyrus that TK Silver was recommending but the newer model. This one:

Test ran a game yesterday. It was quite smooth and nice.


However, fans did get a little loud after about a half-hour of play which was unexpected. Am I just being paranoid as this was a little bit of an investment for me and I want to preserve it and proceed cautiously, or better to invest in a laptop stand/cooler?

Gaming laptops like the one you bought are anything but quiet when pushing both CPU and GPU. The fans will certainly get even more noisier if you run demanding PC games, for example. As long as the notebook don't suddenly shut down by itself, your temperatures are within the "safe" margins of what the components can handle without damage...

In the ROG armory you can switch between profiles. Silent will be quieter under load, but will not let the CPU or GPU fully clock up. Balanced is slightly louder under all circumstances and will get fairly loud under full load and generally allows for most of the CPU performance and most of the GPU performance if needed. Turbo is loud and sets the power limits higher, applies a slight overclock, and will ramp up those fans to infinity and beyond.

Generally dolphin will run most games well with the laptop set to silent mode. You don't need the all core boost clocks on the CPU (unless you are streaming or doing other things while playing) and the GPU is overkill and even with reduced clocks you should be fine unless you are getting the internal resolution to something your screen would never be able to achieve anyways.

It is based on the S design which has a different cooling setup though. A lot more airflow at the cost of keyboard space and a really really dumb trackpad/10key combo thing on the right side. Also just run something like afterburner and check your temps. Anything 80ish Celsius or lower is perfectly normal, 90-95 is slightly overheating (possibly not great thermal paste application at the factory) and 95-100 not good, and higher is approaching bad temps for your CPU (though in reality your system will probably throttle to stupidly slow speeds before you pass the 100c mark... usually 90ish c is the throttle temp).

Thank you for the reassurance. I'll try not to be as paranoid of the fans being loud moving forward.

Great advice as usual, TK. Didn't even know about the ROG armory until I read your post a few days back. This pretty much solved my problem, though some demanding games will lag in silent mode such as GX.
